Cairns, Aug 18: Teenage left-arm pacer Kwena Maphaka has earned a spot in South Africa’s 17-player squad for the three-match ODI series against Australia, starting Tuesday.
Maphaka impressed in the recent T20I series against the Aussies, finishing as the leading wicket-taker with nine scalps, including a four-wicket haul. He could add to his two ODI caps during the Cairns clash, while in-form batter Dewald Brevis is expected to make his ODI debut after scoring 180 runs in three T20Is at an average of 90 and a strike rate over 200.
South Africa captain Temba Bavuma, recovering from a hamstring injury, confirmed he will bat at number three in the opening ODI. “It is always exciting when you see the young faces. Brevis has been putting up his hand and showing what he is capable of,” Bavuma said.
Australia welcome Marnus Labuschagne back into their squad, with Mitchell Marsh leading the team in the absence of regular skipper Pat Cummins. The series will begin in Cairns, before moving to Mackay for the final two matches.
