Pune, Jul 14: In a shocking incident that raised serious food safety concerns, the Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has temporarily suspended the licence of Pune’s iconic Goodluck Cafe after a customer found a glass shard in its popular dish, bun maska.
FDA Joint Commissioner Suresh Annapure confirmed the action on Monday, stating, “An inspection was conducted, during which some unhygienic conditions were found. We have suspended the eatery's licence until further orders and necessary compliance.”
The incident came to light after a couple visiting the café reportedly discovered a piece of glass inside the bun maska. Akash Jalagi, who was dining with his wife, shared the ordeal on social media along with a video, which quickly went viral. “When my wife took a bite, she felt a hard and transparent substance in her mouth. Initially, we thought it was ice, but it turned out to be a shard of glass,” Jalagi told local media.
Following the incident, the couple promptly alerted the FDA, prompting an immediate inspection of the premises.
Café owner Kasim Irani responded to the allegations by clarifying that the bread used in the dish was sourced from an external bakery. “The glass piece was found in the bread, which we don’t bake in-house. We’ve informed the supplier and directed them to take necessary precautions to ensure this doesn’t happen again,” Irani said.
The FDA has assured the public that stringent action will be taken and the café will remain shut until it meets all hygiene and safety standards. The incident has sparked a larger debate on quality control among popular eateries and food vendors in the city.
