Mumbai, Jul 8: Tensions flared in Mira-Bhayandar on Tuesday as activists of the Raj Thackeray-led Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) were detained by police while attempting to hold a morcha in defence of the Marathi language and in protest against the introduction of Hindi from Grade 1 in Maharashtra schools.
The MNS march was seen as a counter-protest to a morcha organised by local traders, who were demonstrating against the recent assault of a shopkeeper allegedly by MNS members. While the traders were granted permission for their rally, the MNS’ request was initially denied, leading to strong objections and confrontations.
Several prominent MNS leaders, including Avinash Jadhav, were detained overnight, and notices under Section 163 were served. However, a significant number of women activists came to the forefront, expressing frustration over what they saw as a double standard in allowing rallies.
“Why are we denied permission to support Marathi when others are allowed to shout ‘Jai Gujarat’ on the streets?” questioned Mira-Bhayandar resident Ruchita Jadhav. Another protester said, “We speak all languages, but Marathi must be preserved. If we stop speaking Marathi, everything about our identity will vanish.”
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis defended the police, stating that the MNS insisted on a route that posed a law-and-order risk. “They were asked to take an alternative route. Permission would have been granted then, and will still be granted if they comply,” he said.
Minister of State for Home, Yogesh Kadam, echoed this sentiment, saying the venue requested by MNS was not suitable. “We’re still open to allowing the morcha at a safer location. There are court guidelines and public safety concerns that must be followed.”
Eventually, after intense standoff and pressure, the police granted MNS permission to hold their rally and released the detained activists. The incident, however, underscores the ongoing linguistic and cultural tensions in parts of Maharashtra.
