Mangaluru: Kudupu mob lynching - Fact-finding report slams govt for failure in impartial probe

Bengaluru, June 29: A fact-finding report released in Bengaluru on Saturday has strongly criticised the Karnataka government for failing to conduct an impartial investigation into the mob lynching of a Muslim youth, Ashraf from Kerala, that took place in Kudpady, Mangaluru, on April 27, 2025.

The report titled “Mangaluru Mob Lynching Case – It's Time to Break the Silence on the Murder of the Constitution” was jointly prepared by the People’s Union for Civil Liberties – Karnataka, the Association for Protection of Civil Rights – Karnataka, and the All India Association for Justice – Karnataka. It was released at the Press Club, shedding light on several critical aspects of the case.

Dalit leader and senior activist Mavalli Shankar, UN expert Ashwini K P, advocates Vinay Srinivas, Maitreyi, and Manavi, SIO state secretary Hayaan Kudroli, PUCL member Shashank, and Abdul Jabbar, brother of the slain youth Ashraf, were present at the event.

The report recounts how Ashraf, a young Muslim ragpicker from Kerala, was brutally beaten to death by a group of men allegedly playing cricket in Kudpady. The incident sparked outrage and shame across Karnataka, but even two months later, the state government has reportedly failed to appoint a special public prosecutor for the case. Additionally, Ashraf’s family has not been provided with the post-mortem report nor any compensation.

The fact-finding committee has flagged this as a clear sign of administrative failure and negligence.

The report also exposed police inaction and indicated that there was a systematic attempt to downplay the mob lynching and project it as if the incident never occurred.
