Nagpur, Jun 29: Chief Justice of India Bhushan Gavai on Saturday strongly endorsed the principle of “one constitution” for the entire country, recalling Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar’s vision of national unity through a single legal framework. He also supported Parliament’s abrogation of Article 370, noting that the Supreme Court upheld the move unanimously.
CJI Gavai was speaking at the inauguration of the country’s first Constitution Preamble Park at Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Law College, where he also unveiled a full-length statue of Dr Ambedkar.
“Our Constitution, crafted by Babasaheb Ambedkar, balances central and federal powers. It has held India together in peace and crisis for 75 years — this is its true strength,” he said.
Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, present at the ceremony, said that the Preamble is the soul of the Constitution. “If citizens live by its values, 90% of the country’s issues will vanish,” he said. His comments come amid a national debate on the possible removal of the words “socialist” and “secular” from the Preamble.
Union Minister Nitin Gadkari praised the law college’s legacy, which includes alumni like former PM P.V. Narasimha Rao and ex-President Justice Hidayatullah. He also announced a grant of Rs 1 cr for the college’s e-library.
