Munich, Jun 26: In a significant development for Indian cricket, T20I skipper and star batter Suryakumar Yadav has undergone successful surgery for a sports hernia in his lower right abdomen at a specialised facility in Munich, Germany.
Confirming the news through a post on social media on Wednesday, the 34-year-old wrote, “Life Update: Underwent surgery for a sports hernia in the lower right abdomen. Grateful to share that after a smooth surgery, I'm already on the road to recovery. Can't wait to be back.”
The surgery marks the third medical procedure for Suryakumar in as many years—he had previously undergone ankle surgery in 2023 and a similar sports hernia operation in 2024. This latest procedure was necessitated by persistent discomfort, which was initially reported last week by PTI.
A sports hernia is a soft tissue injury occurring in the groin or lower abdominal area, often involving tendons or ligaments and typically seen in athletes who engage in high-intensity physical activity.
Following his treatment in Germany, Suryakumar is expected to begin rehabilitation at the BCCI’s Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru in approximately two weeks, with hopes of a timely return ahead of India's white-ball tour of Bangladesh in August.
Although he hasn’t featured in the 50-over format since the 2023 World Cup final, the flamboyant Mumbai batter is slated to return to lead the T20I squad in Chattogram, with the first of three T20Is scheduled for August 26.
Before the surgery, Suryakumar was in explosive form during the 2025 IPL season, earning the Player of the Tournament title for his stellar performance with the Mumbai Indians. His successful surgery and ongoing recovery bring a wave of optimism for Indian cricket fans ahead of the upcoming international fixtures.
