Mumbai, Jun 25: A tense situation unfolded at Mumbai’s Devipada Metro Station on Tuesday afternoon when smoke from a bus fire on the busy Western Express Highway rose into a metro coach, triggering chaos and panic among passengers onboard.
The incident occurred on the Red Line of the Mumbai Metro near Borivali. A private bus, reportedly unoccupied at the time, caught fire just beneath the elevated metro tracks. As flames engulfed the vehicle, thick plumes of smoke billowed upwards, coinciding with the arrival of a metro train at the station.
A video of the incident, shot by commuter Yogesh Namjoshi, has gone viral on social media platforms. The footage shows confused and anxious passengers coughing and looking around for help as the metro coach filled with smoke. Namjoshi alleged that despite visible smoke, the train halted and opened its doors without any warning announcement from the authorities. "There were no announcements, and the smoke inside kept increasing before the doors shut again," he wrote in a post on X.
Emergency responders, including personnel from the Mumbai Fire Brigade and metro security staff, rushed to the spot. The fire was brought under control swiftly, and no casualties were reported. Fortunately, preliminary investigations ruled out foul play. Officials confirmed that no structural damage occurred to the metro station or the train.
Metro services resumed shortly after, and officials assured that safety measures would be reviewed to prevent similar incidents in the future. Commuters, however, have raised concerns about the lack of communication and preparedness during emergencies.
