Goa HC cracks whip on illegal constructions, seeks affidavits from panchayats and municipalities

Panaji, Jun 13: In a significant move aimed at addressing the growing concern over unauthorised constructions in the state, the Goa High Court has directed all Panchayats and Municipal bodies to file affidavits detailing illegal structures within their jurisdictions.

The directive came during the hearing of a suo moto Public Interest Litigation (PIL) initiated by the High Court itself to tackle the menace of illegal structures mushrooming across Goa.

On Thursday, the Collectors of North and South Goa, along with the Director of Municipal Administration, submitted their affidavits before the court, stating that they have issued instructions to relevant authorities to conduct surveys and identify unauthorised constructions.

However, the Director of Panchayats sought additional time to file the department's affidavit.

The court’s directive has been seen as a stern reminder to local bodies to take proactive steps in curbing rampant violations of planning norms. The High Court is expected to continue monitoring the matter closely, as the state grapples with increasing concerns over environmental degradation and unplanned urban expansion.
