New Delhi, Jun 11: In a significant boost to India's clean energy ambitions, TruAlt Bioenergy Limited, the country’s largest ethanol producer, has officially secured Oil Marketing Company (OMC) status, authorising it to market and retail petroleum products, including clean fuels such as ethanol and Bio-CNG.
With this landmark authorisation, TruAlt joins the ranks of companies allowed to establish retail fuel outlets and distribute both conventional and alternative fuels across India. As part of its commitment to inclusive growth, the company has pledged to open at least 5% of its fuel stations in remote and notified regions, aiding last-mile fuel accessibility.
The company's initial rollout includes over 100 strategically located outlets in Karnataka and Maharashtra, aiming to serve both urban and rural fuel demands while offering next-generation blended fuels. The move is also projected to create employment for over 2,000 people, strengthening the rural economy.
Vijay Nirani, Managing Director of TruAlt Bioenergy, called the development a "defining step" in the company’s journey.
“While our retail network will support conventional fuels, our greater focus will be on integrating biofuels and expanding rural outreach,” he said.
He also highlighted TruAlt’s circular economy model.
“By sourcing agri-residue and biomass directly from farmers, we are creating a sustainable loop — from farm to fuel and back to farm — returning both wealth and soil health to the grassroots,” Nirani added.
TruAlt Bioenergy currently commands a 7% market share in molasses-based ethanol and 3.7% of total ethanol supply in India. With a combined ethanol production capacity of 2,000 KLPD from five distilleries, it is the largest ethanol producer in the country.
The company is also among the early participants in the SATAT (Sustainable Alternative Towards Affordable Transportation) scheme through its subsidiary, Leafiniti Bioenergy, which operates Compressed Biogas (CBG) plants. These also generate organic manure by-products, promoting waste-to-energy and circular agriculture.
India’s total petroleum product consumption hit a record 239.5 MMT in FY 2024-25, with petrol usage up 7.5% and diesel-to-petrol consumption ratio narrowing, signalling a shift in mobility trends.
“With over 2.5 crore cars sold annually, India’s mobility appetite is immense. This is our chance to build a smart fuel network that serves today and powers a greener tomorrow,” Mr. Nirani concluded.
Headquartered in India, TruAlt Bioenergy is a pioneer in the integrated biofuels sector, actively driving the transition to cleaner energy sources. From ethanol to compressed biogas, the company champions sustainable energy, rural empowerment, and innovative circular practices, ensuring both environmental and economic gains.
