Mangaluru, May 24: With the southwest monsoon officially arriving along the Karnataka coast, Mangaluru city and its surrounding rural areas experienced heavy rains accompanied by strong winds on Saturday, causing disruptions and minor damage in several locations.

Since early morning, the region witnessed overcast skies, cold gusts of wind, and consistent rainfall. A major incident was reported near Landlinks in Derebail where a large tree, weakened by the winds, came crashing down onto the road, briefly disrupting vehicular movement. Local authorities were quick to respond and clear the obstruction.

Several trees were uprooted near Ladyhill this evening due to heavy rain accompanied by strong winds. A number of vehicles, including a bus and a car, were damaged as a result. The uprooting of three to four trees led to severe disruption of traffic movement in the Ladyhill area.

Reports indicate that the heavy rain and strong winds caused damage in several other parts of the city as well. Following the incident, rescue teams arrived at the spot and began clearance and restoration operations, which are currently underway.

In the wake of the downpour, MLC Ivan D’Souza directed officials to initiate immediate relief measures in areas affected by waterlogging. Several homes within the Mangaluru City Corporation limits reportedly faced flooding, prompting calls for swift government assistance.

Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued an emergency weather alert on Saturday evening, warning of rain accompanied by gusty winds ranging between 40 to 50 kmph in coastal and Malnad regions. Districts under alert include Udupi, Uttara Kannada, Chikkamagaluru, and Shivamogga. The public has been advised to stay vigilant, especially during nighttime hours, as weather conditions remain volatile.

In Udupi, heavy rains have already begun lashing several parts of the district. The district administration is monitoring the situation closely, urging residents to avoid venturing near rivers and low-lying areas prone to flooding.

With pre-monsoon showers intensifying, officials across the affected districts remain on high alert to handle any untoward situations.
