Mangaluru, May 21: Dr Shivani U successfully defended her PhD thesis on May 8 at Nitte (Deemed to be University). She carried out her doctoral research under the guidance of Dr Prashanth Shetty, former professor and coordinator of the KSHEMA Centre for Genetic Services, K S Hegde Medical Academy. He is currently a professor at Srinivas Institute of Allied Health Sciences.
Her thesis, titled 'A Study to Determine the Clinical, Haematological, Cytogenetic and Molecular Profile in Chronic Myeloid Leukemia (CML) Patients,' presents an integrative view of CML progression, with a focus on the diagnostic and prognostic value of cytokines, survivin gene expression, and chromosomal aberrations.

Her doctoral committee included Dr Reshma A Shetty, assistant professor, KSHEMA Centre for Genetic Services; Dr Vijith Shetty, professor, department of oncology, KSHEMA; and Dr Suchetha Kumari N, professor, department of biochemistry, KSHEMA.
Dr Shivani is a native of Mangaluru and the daughter of Bhanukala Uday and Uday Kumar. She will be conferred with the doctoral degree during the forthcoming convocation of the university.
