Recruitment scam surfaces in Assembly Secretariat, 3 years after appointments

Bengaluru, May 20: Allegations of corruption have surfaced surrounding the recruitment process for Group C and D posts in the Karnataka Legislative Assembly Secretariat, nearly three years after the selection process was reportedly completed.

The issue came to light after concerns were raised regarding irregularities in the appointment process, citing a case from Challakere in Chitradurga district. Some individuals have alleged that they paid money to agents who promised them jobs in the Assembly Secretariat.

One aspirant claimed that money was collected under the pretext of securing employment, naming two officials — a male and a female — as being involved in the alleged transactions.

When contacted, Assembly Speaker U T Khader said the matter was serious and warranted an investigation. “This is a grave allegation. If the complainants approach me directly, I will ensure that the matter is thoroughly probed. Any official found involved will face strict action,” he stated.

Upon being informed of the names of the two accused officials, Speaker Khader confirmed that the matter would be examined. According to sources, one of the officials had previously been under Lokayukta scrutiny and was later reinstated in the Secretariat.

Lokayukta Justice Patil said that the body would definitely investigate the case if a formal complaint is filed under the relevant department. A senior Lokayukta officer, speaking on condition of anonymity, added that the institution could act even on anonymous complaints, especially when preliminary evidence or credible allegations are presented.

Meanwhile, a senior official from the legislature department defended the process, claiming that all required procedures and regulations were followed strictly during recruitment. “The examinations were conducted as per established norms. I am not aware of how the individuals you’ve named could have engaged in such alleged malpractice,” the official said.
