Mumbai, May 18: The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has announced that new Rs 20 denomination notes bearing the signature of the current RBI Governor Sanjay Malhotra will be issued in the coming days.

The central bank, in a statement released on Saturday, clarified that the design of the upcoming notes will remain consistent with the existing Mahatma Gandhi series, ensuring uniformity in circulation.

Governor Sanjay Malhotra, who assumed office in December last year following the completion of Shaktikanta Das’s term, will now have his signature printed on the newly issued Rs 20 notes. However, the RBI emphasized that all earlier Rs 20 notes currently in circulation will continue to be legal tender and will remain valid for transactions.

The central bank reiterated that no changes have been made to the size, color, or security features of the Rs 20 notes, and the new issue will simply reflect the change in governorship.

The move marks a routine update in note issuance and comes as part of the RBI's ongoing efforts to maintain clarity and transparency in currency circulation.
