Cuddling at bedtime boosts bond, lowers stress: Study

New Delhi, May 18: A new study has highlighted a heartwarming and simple secret to a happy, long-lasting relationship—cuddling. According to research published in the Journal of Social and Personal Relationships, couples who sleep close together, especially while cuddling or spooning, tend to experience lower stress and greater emotional security in their relationships.

The study, which surveyed 143 heterosexual couples who had been together for an average of 13 years, found that physical closeness during sleep significantly enhances relationship satisfaction. Couples who shared close sleeping positions reported feeling more secure and less anxious—especially those with an anxious attachment style.

Interestingly, the research also revealed that many partners naturally adjust their sleeping habits to match each other’s, even if it means deviating from their usual sleeping style. This subconscious syncing points to the emotional comfort that arises from closeness at bedtime.

Experts say the feel-good factor is largely driven by oxytocin the “bonding hormone” released during cuddling. This chemical not only deepens emotional connection but also promotes better sleep and reduced anxiety.

While there’s no proven link between specific sleeping positions and relationship quality, the emotional intent behind sharing a bed closely seems to matter most.

So the next time you’re heading to bed, don’t hesitate to snuggle up it might just be the sweetest way to strengthen your relationship while catching some quality sleep.
