Dear Do..Re..Me..Fa.. lovers,

Welcome to your favourite music column.  I am truly indebted to you for your great interest and encouragement which gives me more strength to go on and on by presenting to you most melodious musical chords of Konkani.

As I was moving in my regular hunt to present to you yet another sweet and pleasing chord of music, I found a great star with superb talents who is my own parishioner back home, a shining star popularly known as “King of simple lyrics and great music” who is none other that Sri Edward Norbert Pereira fondly known as “Nobby”.

Norbert Pereira is a simple personality with a high level of principles in life.  He is highly allergic to imitating or mimicking others.  He deeply respects Konkani’s rich Tradition & Culture and encourages others to do the same.  It is indeed my unique privilege to present to you this shining star in today’s music episode and I am sure and certain that you will really enjoy listening to this melodious chord.

EDWARD NORBERT PEREIRA - DOHA

Music is inherent in Konkani language.  Konkani is very pleasant to speak and is melodious to hear!   That is why Mother Konkani has produced many musicians among her sons and daughters.  Edward Norbert Pereira is one such musician who creates great music with simple lyrics.  There is a special charm hidden in his songs.  He is fiercely individualistic and never imitates or mimics any other singer.

Family background :-

Edward Norbert Pereira, affectionately known to his dear ones as “Nobby” is the son of John and Mary Pereira.  John and Mary had one daughter and 5 sons, “Nobby” being one of them, born on 6.6.1955.  Residing in the parish of Angelore, Mangalore. Norbert did his early education in St.Aloysius and later pursued his studies in the Karnataka Polytechnic & I.T.I. Mangalore, from where he obtained his diploma in Electrical Engineering and also a diploma in Air-Conditioning & Refrigeration.  Armed with these diplomas, he easily obtained a job in Doha-Qatar, where he presently works.  He is married to Nancy and has two children by the name Nigel and Nester.  His current residence in Mangalore is in Bendur Parish.

Music background :-

Norbert really doesn’t trace out any musical roots from his family.  But still he has lingering doubts that his inspiration to embrace music might have had some affinity to his father’s profession as Sacristan (Mironn) of the Belthangady Church in his prime youth, singing hymns and liturgical music!  Norbert as a teen-ager individually tried to compose lyrics and set music to them without trying to emulate any role model or to imitate any famous singer.  Nevertheless, Norbert pays a great deal of respect to legendary Konkan Kogul Wilfy Rebimbus who has nurtured Norbert’s singing talents.  Norbert’s eldest brother Anthony who also is a song composer has also lent lot of encouragement to Norbert in his quest to do something laudable in Konkani music.
