Mangaluru: 'Terrace Garden' set up at Milagres College

Media Release

Mangaluru, Oct 14: Environmental education in college plays a crucial role in developing the character of caring in community. Instilling environmental awareness can be done by habituating the students with hands-on environmental activities. It is a calming activity for students, especially when there is a lot of stress in terms of pressure and performance. In order to inculcate a sense of responsibility in the students toward the environment, Milagres College came up with the idea of ‘Terrace Garden’.

It was initiated by the principal, Fr Michael L Santhumayor who dedicated his precious time to set up the garden and also to nurture it, as a result of which a wide variety of plants have been grown. He also motivated the students of Eco and Life Science Association to involve whole heartedly in this activity.

The terrace garden contains a wide variety of plants such ladies finger, bottle gourd, snake gourd, pumpkin, double beans, brinjal and so on. as bio compost as manure. Bio compost is prepared within the college premises by utilizing the waste generated from the Food Production Lab of BSc, BHS and FND students and is used as manure. This not only helps to produce chemical-free produce, but also acts in a way so as to minimize and utilize organic waste generated in the college, hence students are also educated on the importance of waste management.

On Saturday October 12, a training session was held for the students by the principal who illustrated the importance of terrace garden and waste recycling by bio composting. The students were taken on a round to the terrace garden where they were explained about the different varieties of plants being grown in the garden. The students were also encouraged to utilize the open space to start cultivating and spreading greenery around the campus.
