Mangaluru, Apr 28: It is gathered that a mega railway laundry where cleaning, drying, and ironing facilities would be available, will come up at Ullal. Palakkad railway division has decided to set up the laundry at Ullal for preparing soiled clothes for reuse by passengers travelling by trains leaving from the city junction station.

The railways have already called for the tender and the entity which will bag the contract will be provided land for the construction by the railway department. The contractor has to construct the building, install washing and cleaning machinery besides providing drying facility and ironing equipment. The used bed sheets, pillow covers, blankets etc would be delivered by railways to the laundry which have to be cleaned and given back within the stipulated time.

There is proposal to set up three laundries within Palakkad division of the railways. The proposed laundry at Ullal will be of one tonne capacity. These laundries are set up at places where there is enough space and adequate water supply. The laundries are given on ten-year lease and the contracting company has to foot water and power bills of the laundry.

It is nice to have this processing plant to produce clean sheets for travellers etc . But what about the waste products from the plant? Where will it be released? Has any body thought about environmental results?
