Kundapur: Charlie Chaplin Statue to Move Away from Ottinene

Kundapur: Charlie Chaplin Statue to Move Away from Ottinene

Daijiworld Media Network - Kundapur (SP)

Kundapur, Mar 14: The dreams of Kannada film director Hemant Hegde to erect a 67-feet-high statue of renowned artiste Charlie Chaplin, claimed to be the biggest ever statue of the comedian, near Someshwar temple in Ottinene near here, is facing bitter opposition from the Hindu activists. The activists say that erection of the statue of a Christian at the scenic place, located on the border of Udupi and Uttara Kannada districts is not desireable.

Hemant wanted to build the statue for his upcoming movie, 'House Full'. The film unit had earlier planned to put up the statue at a spot near here, but could not get the required permission as it falls under the forest department. Later, it selected a place, about 300 yards away from Lord Someshwar temple near the coastline. The team had also conducted the customary 'Guddali Puje' for starting the work. Director Hemant, art director Chetan Mundadi and journalist Janardan Maravante had attended the Puja programme.

Hemant said that on the very next day of holding the above programme, some youngsters approached him and registered their opposition to the project. "We spoke to the local panchayat and other leaders and decided to go ahead with the project," he said.  He stated, that nearly 20 activists claiming to be affiliated to Hindu Jagran Vedike led by Suresh Bhagwadi came to the site on Friday March 13 in vehicles and stopped the work. "They were prepared to allow us to proceed with the erection of the statue subject to the condition that it would be demolished after the filming. When art director Mundadi clarified that Chaplin was a great artiste, they said they suspect us to build a statue of Jesus Christ too, later," he explained. Hegde said that the protestors explained to them that they do not like to see Chaplin's face before entering Someshwar temple and that they doubt, the spot will transform into a picnic spot, disturbing the holy atmosphere of the temple. They also scattered the construction materials and forced the unit to fill up the eight feet deep pit dug for the purpose, he said. "The protestors said they would demolish the statue even if it is built with sanction from authorities and asked us to build the statue of Swami Vivekananda instead," he stated.

Udupi deputy commissioner Hemalata said that only oral permission had been given to install the statue on the location. “The process of giving written permission is under way,” she added. As the erection of the statue may flout the Coastal Regulatory Zone rules, the relevant details will have to be examined thoroughly, she said.

Mundadi said, that the team has now decided to move out of Udupi district and set up the statue elsewhere, probably in Bangalore.

I was a fan of charlie chaplin in my school days. Now i feel, if the building of his statue is opposed by some poeple, let the project be scrapped, instead of fighting amonsgst ourselves and creating animosity and bad blood.

Thanks daijiworld for creating an opportunity for your readers to comment in your columns. Some readers comment in such a way that they start hating each other in the name of religion. I request you to just publish the news and no comments should be allowed. As a Hindu my blood boils when I read some comments. (I am sure some Christians and Muslims also feel the same as I do) Let me be frank and speak from my heart...starting with new life episode to pub incident comments after comments are targeting each others religion.

It is very simple - The twin city of Mangalore and Udupi is on the threshold of becoming the major hub financialy in Karnataka - And people of our own state dont want this prosperity to happen to these two coastal cities. So it is state sponserd terrorism against Mangalore and Udupi. Christians and Muslims are just scape goats of their ulterior motives.

Theres no statue for him even in his birth place or even in US. I don't know why we are hell bent in building 67ft statue for him. He didn not believe in idol worship, so it will be insulting Charlie Chaplin if we build Idol for him and later everyone wearing mala during his birthdays and anniversaries. Stop this nonsense and leave the beach alone

Lloyd Dsouza, Christians and service?? check this news. Ludhiana : A Kenyan National who was detained for nearly an year by a ChristianMedicalCollege here, was released following the intervention of a Human Rights NGO. Antony Odhiambo from Kenya a student from Delhi came to Ludhiana to meet a friend during last year March. He was admitted to the Hospital following abdominal pain. He was slapped with a whopping bill of Rs 690,000 for the treatment. Medical college authorities say he was treated for intestinal obstruction and Hernia. For Anthony , It was his Religion which acted as a curse in this so called Charity Bussiness of Missionaries. Unfortunately there were no option to convert a already Christian, If not they must have waived the bill and added him as another innocent lamb in their herd. Once again it has been made clear that Christians run Hospitals, social service Centres, Schools and Colleges as a hook to lure people for conversion. These services are also used for making profit for Christian political promotion and influencing the government.

With the overt / covert support given by the Yeddy Govt to such lumpen elements, emboldens them to take law in their hands. Why should the film director want to erect the Chaplin statue on a permanent basis? Use it as a prop for the movie and then have it removed. One needs to take permission to erect statues...........oral permission is not enough. South Kanara region has become a hotbed of communal discord, which has happened since the BJP started to win seats in that area. Wake up people and discard all the BJP candidates from winning any of the seats on offer. Come out in large numbers and vote.

This should not take any religious turn.Let the nature be as it is. We dont need any statues anywhere close to coastline. We have already spoilt the Murdeshwar beach with statues and constructions. The very idea of any statue,or any constructions on the entire coastline, be it religious or otherwise is most unwelcome. Both Art and God are in the nature in the coastline. So let us have statues etc. elsewhere but not here please.

Now it hurts you people right, why are you blaming hindus for each and everything, instead blame the individual who had done this, instead of community. Don't make communal issue. Whether this statue is built or not what are you going to lose, think there is enough problems in india which needs attention. Think that all are human beings.

Suresh for your kind information during the late PM Narashima Rao in 1992 when India required very badly foreign exchange who has sent money?. It was NRIs from Middle East, Western Countries. These Indians never talked religion like you have mentioned. For them to save the country became priority. If selfishness prevails in a society do not blame others. Try to share with your less fortunate brothers and things will improve. After all religion is opium to the society.

Instead let him build the Tallest Temple at the same Spot and I am sure the HJV will be happy. We have more temples than Hospitals in India.

Charlie Chaplin was the legendary actor and he didn’t do anything against Hindu Religion. Their opposition is because he was Christian and coming to Suresh Udupi comments India belongs to Indians no where in the constitution it is mentioned India is for Hindu’s & India is surviving because of Indians that comprises citizens of all faiths.

The protest by Hindu activists is not a surprise and was expected. I am not favoring nor denouncing this issue because Christians did not propose this matter nor behind this matter but significantly one thing is certain while bjp is ruling Christians are severed to fix any Christian identity or previous identities to be sustained. Another thing is certain that they have made us all Christians to get united.

I cannot understand why every issue now a days turns to a communal issue?? Why people of India cannot understand that we all are the creation of One God and the communities are generated by the people for their own benefits?? Instead of maintaining peace in the country why we have to march towards the footprints of Taleban?? Allah, Yesu, Ishwara are the three different faces of One God. Pls keep in mind and maintain Peace inside the Country, your locality and at your home as well.

It is really sad to see the state of affairs in Karnataka and the way these self-proclaimed jagaran vedike etc function. This particular project would have made the Maravanthe beach more popular amoung tourists, which would have attracted more tourists, which in turn would have generated more job opportunities and business for the locals. Why Swami Vivekananda's statue, is he GOD and what is wrong if someone build Lord Jesus Christ statue, even Mahatma Gandhi was influenced by Christ and the Bible, who are these few handful of ignorant goons to comment about christianity and Jesus Christ.
