Mangaluru, Jun 1: The prestigeous St Aloysius College (Autonomous) has been ranked among the best colleges in India Survey-2018 conducted by the India Today magazine in its June 4 edition.

The college had filed its participation in arts, science, commerce, management, computer applications categories among the undergraduate programmes and social work category in the postgraduate section.

India Today-MDRA team does survey of best institutes in these categories along with engineering, medical, dental, hotel management, media, fashion design, law and architecture. The survey result was based on objective questionnaire evaluation and also perceptual evaluation, having a weightage of 50:50 for general programmes and 60: 40 for professional programmes.

In the country, the college stands in the 50th place for arts education out of the top 100 ranked colleges. In science category, the college bagged the 44th place out of the top 100 colleges ranked. In the commerce section, college is in the 64th place out of the top 100 listed.

Among the professional programmes, in computer application (BCA) category, SAC is in the 20th place out of the top 50 colleges listed in the country. For management (BBA) course the college has secured 29th rank, out of 50 ranks announced. In the social work programme (MSW), out of the top 25 institutes the college stands in the 18th place

The objective questionnaire had components like, student selection process, student diversity, fees and funding, teacher quality, living experience, personality development and leadership, Academic progression, internship and placements, new age courses etc

Registrar of St Aloysius College (Autonomous) Dr A M Narahari speaking to daijiworld said, "We feel proud that we are getting recognised by many external agencies including the media, especially the two surveys conducted by the national level journals such as The Week and India Today which are credible. We are awaiting the survey by The Week magazine and are hopeful that our ranking will be much higher this time."

Asked about the parameters on which the rankings were given, he said, "There are many parameters such as qualification of the staff, diversification of the students, student achievements, student placements, infrastructual facilities, student support system like library, internet facility. The vertical and horizontal facilities like choices available for the students and there are many such areas offer credibility to an institution which is objectively evaluated. For these evaluations are not on basis of what we claim, but they have an independent assessment with the help of research publication, they by going to Google scholar and other search engines they find out the achievements of the college. Even public perception is sought in the survey and public opinion about the college is collected," he said.

He further said, "Parameters vary from organisation to organisation. The Week survey focuses more on placements where as India Today conducted survey on the basis of diversification of the students from different states. It is also challenging to maintain the rankings in the coming days. This is the first time that we have been ranked in a wide variety of programmes whereas earlier it was a general college ranking such as NAAC acredition and NIR ranking.. India Today and The Week survey ranking is based on faculties like BA, BSc, BCom. These evaluations will also help us get more grants from the UGC."

The college has been sanctioned a grant of Rs 5 crore for being a lead autonomous college for quality and excellence under RUSA (Rashtriya Uchchtar Shiksha Abhiyan, MHRD, government of India).

St. Aloysius College deserves the recognition. Alumni community of this college is living testimony for that. Public knows this. Media recognition is a late but event.

Great recognition for the vision and selfless work of Society of Jesus priests. We Mangalurians were blessed to have an institution like this for around 140 years with a very high standard all throughout. Thousands of us are scattered around the world have done very well in life and are indebted to this organization. Hope there will be more recognitions and government support to the college to grow even further .

I agree with you Flavian 100%. I too am a product of SAC Alumni 1977. I can proudly say that I have done extremely well in all possible adversities in life and I credit this to the schools I attended and molded - St. Josephs, St. Antonys and St. Aloysius. Well done SAC. Knowing the internal management and quality of education, I can proudly say, you are number 1 in my life.

St Aloysius, St.Xaviers and St. Loyola, these institutions are autonomous and do not require any kind of ranking to showcase themselves. These are always been known for the excellence in all streams. So I don't think ranking does Matter for these colleges. Ranking may have many criteria, and due to that, these institutions may show some lower ranking, but on an all round education criteria, these colleges will stand always at the top.

Hope and Trust our Education Minister notes this. After years of toil in taking education to the nook and corners of INDIA, by these unselfish INDIAN priests and nuns, some people think our minority community has not done anything for India. I say this because my younger brother who went to experience the torments of life in a village in BIHAR some years ago, fell in love with the poor and gave up his ambition to be a Scientist (he was already a microbiologist from St. Xaviers Mumbai) and opted to serve the poor people and set up schools in that village. He has done miraculously well by establishing many schools. Today he is the provincial and teaches Christianity to Christians, Islam to Muslims and Recites Geeta to Hindus. He is INDIAN at heart. Chrstian by faith.

    Congrats St. Aloysius College Administration.
