Raichur: Medha Patkar demands liquor ban in state ‘by hook or crook'

Daijiworld Media Network - Raichur (MS)

Raichur, Oct 30: "Ban alcohol completely before the next assembly elections," urged Medha Patkar, environment activist and convener of Nasha Mukth Bharath at a state-level convention and rally organized by the Ban Alcohol Movement Karnataka at the premises of Agricultural Produce Marketing Corporation (APMC) of Rajendra Ganj here on Sunday, October 29.

She inaugurated the convention by breaking a beer bottle. "Time for change has arrived. We have planned state-wide movement under the banner 'Ban alcohol by hook or crook'. Political parties have to fulfil our demand," she added.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr Shivamurthy Shivacharya, seer of Taralabalu, Sirigere, Chitradurga, said, "Alcohol needs to be banned throughout Karnataka state. Let this movement continue till all the political parties assure the public of the same. Let this movement spread to even the remotest village of Karnataka and succeed in its mission."

He also asked the government to take bold step to ban alcohol throughout the year regardless of days on which festival or fairs are celebrated or elections are conducted.

Lal Hussain Kandagal of Inakal, progressive thinker and sister Teena, pro-women activist also spoke on the occasion.

Around 8000 people mainly women took part in the convention.

Emulate Tipu

A press meet demanding the liquor ban was also held. Dr Shivamurthy Shivacharya asked the government to emulate Tipu Sultan by enforcing liquor ban rather than by celebrating his birthday.

No country has succeeded 100 % by banning liquor, pork or beef.
Even USA had failed in this regard.

Instead fight for population control, eradication of superstition, poverty and above all corruption.

Let us all have true patriotism flowing in our lives instead of fake nationalism based on religion etc.

Banning Liquor or food didn't work in the past, at present and so in future. Control is o.k. not ban!
Why liquor alone, even worst things like Gukta, Cigarette, Beedi ban doesn't yeild desired results!
Any food or drink in moderation is o.k or may be good, excess is bad!

There is Contradiction in their statements, sometimes they say it's personal choice that who eat or drink what is their choice. But here they say ban liquor completely, but it contradicts their own version.
Drinking is personal choice as like eating...

But considering the negative effect on the families due to drunkards, i will support them whole heartedly. Ban liquor completely so that every family lives a normal life.
Liquor creates mental imbalance in some when consumed which leads to many crimes, criminal activities, accidents, fights & even murders.

I request "LIQUOR SHOULD BE BANNED COMPLETELY ALL OVER THE COUNTRY".

Kiran, Places like Saudi & Kuwait has complete Alcohol Ban. But I understand that still liquor is available in black. Yesterday I read in Newspapers that there were 4 deaths in Bihar after drinking illicit drinks. During my stay in Mumbai during 1970 there was total prohibition there. But there were posh bars operating in some of residential flats specially owned by Goans & Mangaloreans. Even during that time there were plenty of raids in Mangalore where there was local brands were sold. Hence these total prohibition in India will never work, rather more people will drink illicit liquor & will die!

Saudi has decided to allow women to drive and over here we are going backwards!!!

There are many more important things we need to do as leaders, if one can really explain the need to target liquor would be nice for the general public .

If you are sticking to the general reason like liquor will destroy families, then its an old as old as the commentator to have not improvised.....can the person look at evolving methods to address these issues

Other issues that will definitely give a lot more relief are
    1. hook or by crook remove corruption
    2. Hook or by crook remove corrupt officials
    3. Hook or by crook remove religious violence
    4. Hook or by crook ban tobacco

one of the easiest lobbies is liquor so that hooch cn be bought it and still cause disturbance in society

Awareness about liquor is is a lot better , one day these kind of leaders will also ban Internet ,
claiming hook or by crook it is destroying society

its time the leaders invest time in providing answers and work to the claims they made while they were elected.

This demand by Medha Patkar is utter nonsense. Liquor ban by the Morarji Government in Mumbai in the early 1950s failed miserably because bootlegging became very prevalent; and it was the same in the Prohibition days in the US in the 1930s. Just because Medha drinks only "madhu", doesn't give her the right to ask everyone to substitute "madhu" for a drink or two on important occasions. Drink coca-cola instead? Another similar minded person will demand ban on lotteries and all games of chance. Never ending demands on people's behaviour! They are bent on setting up moral police.

Just as we oppose beef ban, so will be oppose anyone who wants to trample upon individual rights. We live in a democracy and not a police state. Nobody is forcing anyone to drink. Just because rape is an evil and crime, will you stop women from moving is public to avoid rapes? We have various addictions. Some people are addicted to internet, therefore will you ban internet? Some are addicted to movies, Will you ban movies? Some are addicted to prescription medicines, Will you ban medicines? You social activists have one answer for everything. BAN. BAN. Remember we are living in the 21st century, Don't try and take us back to the medieval times just like the TaliBAN.
