Mangaluru: Pedestrian falls into basement, lies unconscious for an hour, people take photos

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (SB)

Mangaluru, Sep 5: In a heart-breaking news reported here on Tuesday September 5, a pedestrian lay unconscious with head injuries at the busy KS Rao Road for almost an hour, even as passersby took pictures and videos of him.

The pedestrian fell down the unbarricaded basement just outside Joy Alukkas jewellery store in Mischief mall here.

Though several people were around, none of them came to his rescue, it is said. Instead, they took out their mobile phones and captured his photos and videos.

After almost an hour, the traffic police arrived and took him away. The pedestrian sustained head injuries from the fall.

The police called 108 ambulance but their request was turned down, it is said. The police then called an auto rickshaw and with the help of home guards and admitted the man to Wenlock hospital.

Dangerous underground basement

The basement is around 8 ft deep and constructed next to the roadside without any barricade. Hundreds of people walk along this road every day.

It is however, not exactly known whether the pedestrian lost balance or fainted while passing along this road. Nevertheless, eyewitnesses said that a barricade would have save him from falling into the basement and sustaining injuries.

No case has been registered.

''Pedestrian falls into basement, lies unconscious for an hour, people take photos''

People are retards.... what can we expect.

Secondly we should not be relying on good samaritans to help the injured and take them to the hospital. The govt must setup emergency services in such a way that they should able to reach spot with in 5-10 mins. people should not be carrying the injured person around because it may result in causing further injury.

There are no emergency services in our country and no emergency lanes designated in our roads. Simply put there is no value of life in india.

There are many buildings like that in the city without barricades. It is very dangerous to leave them like that especially for children. The other day I happened to be near MacMall area where there was no barricade to protect people from falling into the basement. MCC, kindly look for these in all buildings in Mangaluru.

Failure of Mangalore Municipality. What people should do except taking pic. Even media also doing same. See the way they lifting him. I request the municipality to impose a heavy fine to the building owner and sack the officer who passed the building without barricades. India is growing but no proper planning. Youths are busy in rallies and protest, organisations are busy in fighting each other. why they are not training people how to act during emergencies. Very sad to read about this.

its a shame to note the reaction by people. First and foremost catch hold of the Builder, contractor and Engineer from MCC who permitted for such construction. That building itself violated norms at the construction level, we are unaware how it got completion certificate....I still remember the harra ferry during tenure of earlier MCC rulers

very bad.when someone falls and get injured ,think he/she is your own family member and try to help, except in police cases better call police first instead of getting in trouble with them.still try to save life, instead of wating to the person to die.I ask first how come MCC gave permission to such a work without looking into the map?it doesnt have any protection either to people or any vehicle in middle of mangalore.Mayor please look into it ,before you order a bull dozer to destroy another building.Hope the fellow will survive ,and get well fast.hope his head injury is not serious.

I was right there when this happened. This report is wrong. Traffic police arrived within 10-15 mins. Ambulance was already called by some passersby. But it didn't arrive in time. So he was taken in the rikshaw.

Although building security guards were right there, watching this guy lying in the basement, they didn't take any action to help him immediately. One guard was telling `aye saithe, aye saithe` instead of helping him. Guards came after 3 mins, splashed some water on his face.

A rikshaw driver in the nearby auto-stand saw this guy falling, but didn't move his ass from his auto, rather signaled my mother to look down in the basement as she was looking around in the direction of noise.

I went with security guards to the basement. They splashed some water and two other guys were calling the Ambulance. I left the basement when traffic police arrived there.
I didn't notice anyone taking pictures. The guy with mobile phone in the above picture was calling the Ambulance I think.

What's wrong with the public nowadays,it could have been one of them.Emergency medical treatment is unheard of in our country, only the almightys blessings will have to be there.People are so scared too to help anybody in distress, fearing the police and courts. The individual should be taking the property owner and the city's corporation to court and claim a hefty compensation.

Yes my friend, there is no such thing as emergency response team in this country. People have to rely more on the benevolence of other kind hearten people than on state machinery to provide the any emergency response. I have personally experienced the poor state of affairs two years back when a 24 year old friend of mine fell of the mango tree and broke his leg badly in Udupi district.

The districts of Udupi and DK have more than 3 million combined population. With such a large population base, it is not rocket science to develop a sustainable and an effective emergency response system. What people and municipal corporations do not realise is that the occurrence of emergencies such traffic accidents or the one noted in this new article happens with such regular precision that it is actually possible to build a mathematical model to predict such occurrences and design an emergency response to such situations. Merely buying another 10 ambulance will not make much of a difference if they are are not allocated to various filed units scientifically.

It is imperative on people like us to actually put pressures on mayors in Udupi and Kudla highlighting the sad state of emergency response machinery and to develop a scientific mechanism to deal with the emergency situations. If the state machinery fails to provide a decent emergency response solution, it is actually failing to stand up to the right to life guaranteed in our constitution.

Same thing when people lynch someone and take photos, rape and make videos. Sheer apathy. Just shows the violence in our minds. Pathetic.
At least in rural areas the public is extremely helpful in case of an accident... In fact a crowd gathers even if its a minor accident.
