Mangaluru, Jul 29: Residents of the Saripalla-Kolchar Gudda area on the outskirts of Mangaluru are facing severe hardship due to alleged illegal stone quarrying that has reportedly been continuing in the area for a long time.

The alleged quarrying activities have not only raised concerns over environmental damage but have also severely affected the condition of the local roads. With heavy stone-laden trucks plying through the area regularly, the roads have deteriorated, resulting in large potholes and craters.

In an attempt to fill the potholes, quarry operators reportedly dumped soil on the road. However, following the recent rains, the road has turned into a muddy stretch, making it extremely difficult for schoolchildren, motorists, and pedestrians to commute.

Local resident Jacintha Lobo alleged that when residents question the quarry operators about the illegal activities and the deteriorating road conditions, they are threatened and allegedly subjected to attempts of assault.

Residents had earlier submitted a complaint to the deputy commissioner regarding the alleged illegal quarrying and environmental damage in the area. Responding to the complaint, the deputy commissioner had reportedly directed the department of mines and geology to conduct an investigation and take appropriate action.

However, residents allege that despite the directions, no officials from the concerned department have visited the spot or conducted an inspection so far.

“Due to the negligence of the authorities, we are forced to suffer every day. We are facing immense hardship because of the deteriorating road and the alleged illegal quarrying activities,” said local resident Anoop Lobo.

Residents have urged the authorities to immediately inspect the area, investigate the alleged illegal quarrying activities, repair the damaged road, and take strict action against those responsible.
