Udupi: Case filed against MLA Yashpal Suvarna for hate speech during protest

Udupi, Jul 29: An FIR has been lodged against Udupi MLA Yashpal Suvarna for allegedly delivering a provocative and hateful speech during a protest organised by the Udupi district BJP in the city on Tuesday, July 28.

The FIR was registered at the Udupi town police station based on a complaint filed by Ashok Kumar Kodavoor, Udupi district Congress president.

According to the complaint, the Udupi MLA referred to CJP protestors and Congress leaders as terrorists and also called Congress leader Rahul Gandhi a drug addict. His statements were categorised as inflammatory and constituted hate speech.

FIR number 103/2026 has been registered at the Udupi town police station under sections 57, 192, 196(2), 352, 353(2), and 351(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Police stated that further legal proceedings will be initiated.

    I can understand what the MLA was trying to say. But unfortunately, he did a disservice to himself by using a wrong example and thereby demonstrating that he lacks some of the very traits he was desperately looking for in RaGa. At the very least, people in his position must think, deliberate and finally rehearse many times before announcing with a bang somewhere.

    Unfortunately, this is the only way these people can gain power and keep their chair. If they talk the truth then they will be out of business. The whole political language and culture has lost the standards.
