Puttur, Jul 29: After the gram panchayat and also general public alleged that a building coming up at Merunji within Nettana within Bilinele gram pancyhayat limits was meant to house a bar, Kadaba special tahsildar visited the spot on Friday July 28 evening, and asked the owner not to continue with the construction.
As per the Supreme Court order, the bar standing at Nettana beside the highway has been closed. The villagers have accused a person named Thomson from Merunji of constructing a building on his land for reopening of the said bar. Kadaba special tahsildar, John Prakash Rodrigues, ordered suspension of construction work towards protecting public interest.
Bilinele gram panchayat development officer, Keerthi Prasad, had visited the said spot on Friday afternoon and ordered stoppage of building construction. When the tahsildar reached there, he saw that hundreds of villagers had gathered there. The people were found to be raising slogans against the construction work. Bilinele gram panchayat president, Sharada, also informed that no building licence has been obtained for this building and that the panchayat has received representation from people that it is meant for housing a bar. She also said that in the gram sabha too opposition against the building has emerged and that the concerned were asked to stop the building.
The special tahsildar then asked building owner, Thomson, not to continue with construction work. The building owner said that it was not proper to stop construction going on a land belonging to him. He however, evaded the question of the bar saying that the issue of opening of bar can be handled later.
Angered by this response, the tahsildar sought records from the owner. He obtained a copy of land conversion order and asked the revenue inspector, Koragappa Hegde, to cancel the same. He warned the owner of initiating legal steps if work on the building is continued.
Panchayat vice president, Mayfee Cherian, member, Manoj Kumar, leader, Radhakrishna, Kadaba assistant sub-inspector, Ravi and others were present.
