Bengaluru: Gloomy picture - vegetable prices might rise steeply, tomato already Rs 70 per kg

Daijiworld Media Network - Bengaluru (SP)

Bengaluru, Jul 13: The state has been reeling under acute shortage of rainfall. As a result there has been drastic reduction in the total area where tomato, onion, and green chilli are being grown during this season. Because of sudden drop in the quantum of vegetables, prices of these times are expected to rise unreasonably as demand for these vegetables will not come down because of their widespread usage by families.

Analysts point out that the total rainfall in the state so far has been 233 mm as against the normal rainfall of 294 mm. The meteorological department expects rainfall to pick up shortly. If that happens, farmers might bring additional lands under cultivation for these vegetables. In such a scenario, the prospects for consumers will brighten as prices tend to fall with increase in total output. Tomato prices are already hovering around Rs 70 a kg.

Districts like Chitradurga, Dharwad, Ballari, Chamarajanagara and Davanagere where onion is grown in abundance, Gadag, Ballari, Chikkamagaluru, and Hassan districts where green chillis are normally grown, and city rural district, Ramanagara, Kolar and Chikkaballapur where tomatoes are normally grown, have seen considerable reduction in the land area under cultivation. Naturally production of these items will be hit, and their rates may rise to beyond the reach of common people, it is being feared.

As against the normal area of 12,000 hectares in which onion is grown, this time, seeding has happened only in 9,000 hectares. Last year, green chilli had been grown in over 55,000 hectares but this time, only 4,000 hectares have been cultivated. Tomato has also seen a drastic reduction with only 4,000 hectares having been brought under its cultivation. In comparison, potato cultivation has something to cheer about, with over 14,300 hectares already having been brought under its cultivation.

Co-operative banks that are under the RBI schedule, are scheduled co-op banks, which enjoyed all the privileges of other banks in relation to demonetization. But, there are district co-op banks which are under state govt co-operation act and not governed by RBI. These banks were not allowed to deposit their old currency which was running in thousands of crores, but, now for a brief period it is allowed, may be July 15 is the last day. Hence that is being counted.

I read somewhere that district co-operative banks which are outside RBI control are under politicians and govt did not allow to deposit their old currency. But now owing to pressure, this month, govt has allowed

Demonetisation ranks among one of the biggest crimes in independent India.

Modi government’s demonetisation decision may have resulted in the loss of roughly 1.5 million jobs, according to new survey data put out by the Centre for Monitoring Indian Economy (CMIE).

CMIE’s data is based on the result of consecutive waves of household surveys performed from January 2016 to April 2017.

It has become more difficult to believe the reports in the media that our economy is the fastest growing in the world while domestic prices on essential commodities have risen steeply ... eg. tomatoes, RS 100, per kg ? Our elected leaders are busy travelling the world to bring business to India, but unless the common citizens life improves with affordability, good healthcare, jobs, harmony and peaceful coexistence, no one truly believes these reports.

Soon after Shastri took over the prime ministership of India after Nehru's death, India was attacked by Pakistan. At the same time there was scarcity of food grains in the country. Shastri gave the slogan "Jai Jawan Jai Kisan" to enthuse the soldiers to defend India and simultaneously cheering farmers to do their best to increase the production of food grains to reduce dependence on import.
The agrarian based farming largely based on monsoon it is common to see the rise during the demand supply chain gap.Present India from 'Green revolution' reached to 'food scarcity'. This is the dilapidated situation of farmers of India.
The nation experiencing 20% drop in annual rainfall and 70% of rivers are drying permanently in summer, this is expected in nation with population of more than 1 Billion. The corporate capitalist oriented central government polysis is another reason along with lack of support price for increasing suicide and failure of farming sector.
Once the nation fully self sufficient for the food is now largely depend for even protein rich 'Dal' under PM Modi regime. The syndicates associated with renowned ministers and politicians have earned almost four times the profit by doing so. However, the investigating agencies are not able to track them. Forget about the 'beef' today Rs 55 per kilo African dal was sold in India for Rs 175 which runs to scam of 2.5 lakh crores.
Other than blaming the 70 years past of Congress, the ruling BJP can't even move beyond the 'Gau rakshak' with daily lynching when farmers are taking their life . But government is thinking waving of farm loans which amount to 1.5 lakh crores will solve the problem of farmers once for all.But indirectly it does put additional burden in terms of taxation on the common citizens of India.

Such calamity is beyond humans hands but good water management can provide some relief. Government should make alternative arrangements and not to remain & pray to Rain God.

I agree with you..... our political leaders will not search for solution that how to bring the rate down.... If the prices of petrol, vegetable, onions increases due to rain or world market rate.... our politicians of opposite party will make only agitation to spoil the ruling party..... They will ride on bullock cart if petrol rates increased.... they will make garland of onion or vegetable and wear and dance to show that this is happen due to the ruling party....... When same thing happens during their rule they will hide or give some silly reasons. When GST was presented in parliament the opposition was against GST. When old government wanted to bring foreign investment, and Chinese invasion, the present leaders were giving statement which were to harm the ruling Government. I saw when old Government gave invitation for Pakistani leaders to discuss about peace.... people commented India is serving Biryani..... When their leaders or party people go and meat Terrorist.... Party gave statement that it is their personal judgement.
