Mangaluru: After Congress leaders raise objections, Satheesh Kumar's appointment stayed

Updated

Mangaluru, May 26: The appointment of IPS officer Satheesh Kumar to the post of police commissioner of Mangaluru city has been stayed by the state government.

The decision comes in the wake of a complaint to chief minister Siddaramaiah by minister U T Khader and other Congress legisalators from Mangaluru against Satheesh Kumar's appointment.

As per an order issued by the government on Thursday May 25, Satheesh Kumar was to replace police commissioner Chandra Sekhar, who has been transferred as IGP of CID and economic offences, Bengaluru.

The Congress leaders led by Khader had pointed out to the CM that Satheesh had been the SP of Dakshina Kannada during the infamous Mangaluru church attacks in 2008, in the aftermath of which worshippers were allegedly subjected to police atrocity.

Sources said that there is possibility of the government appointing another officer for the post of police commissioner.

Mangaluru, May 26: Congress leaders from the Dakshina Kannada district, including minister U T Khader and legislators, are reportedly unhappy with the appointment of IPS officer Satheesh Kumar to the post of police commissioner of Mangaluru city.

Soon after the state government issued transfer orders of IPS officers including Mangaluru police commissioner Chandra Sekhar, the Congress leaders led by minister U T Khader are understood to have spoken to chief minister Siddaramaiah and expressed their dissatisfaction with Satheesh Kumar's appointment.

The transfer order reportedly came as a surprise to Congress legislators in Mangaluru.

Now, reports suggest that due to opposition from U T Khader and other leaders, the handing over of charge to the new police commissioner may be delayed or even cancelled altogether.

It is said that when Satheesh Kumar had earlier served as SP of Dakshina Kannada district, people had complaints regarding law and order. The infamous church attacks in 2008 and the subsequent police atrocity on worshippers had taken place during Kumar's tenure. Now with elections coming, the government has sent a wrong signal to the people of Mangaluru and Dakshina Kannada by appointing Kumar as the police chief of the city, say Congress leaders.

Sources said that U T Khader, in his complaint to the CM, has especially pointed out to Satheesh Kumar's alleged role in the police atrocity in Ullal following the church attacks. The Congress leaders have contended that at a time when outgoing police commissioner Chandra Sekhar had instilled confidence in the citizens by maintaining law and order, the appointment of Satheesh Kumar would demoralise them.

Mr Chandrasheker was an upright, excellent, unbiased Police Officer and Mangalore was really happy with him. Please retain him for another year. Mr Sateesh Kumar has hurt the sentiments of the Christian community by his attacking innocent people and whose blood has surely stained his hands and will remain there.

There is nothing wrong in apprehension about the officer...., let us wait & see how he deliver his duty under the present government..., if he was obeying to the orders of the then govt..., hope he should function on the same principle under the present day governance under the noble leadership of shriman Parameshwarji & CM sidduji...,
let us wait & watch ...., the officer would have repented for his mistake (if at all so..., definitely he also being a human..., can recall the days of his behavior against innocents ) and now he may be an upright officer of choice by the state govt...,

It is Police duty to maintain law &order, peace & harmony in the society. If any higher rank officers are not capable of doing so or if they act like uneducated then their service must keep for limited status. If Mr. Sathis is acted for gundas, then the best place for him is the naxal squad.

Compare any Commissioners who served in Mangaluru district, the culprits got caught swiftly & maximum criminal cases were solved during Police commissioner Chandra Sekhar's tenure. He has really done good job.

We need a tough and efficient IPS officer who can deal with communal, anti-social forces as moral policing is biggest challenge in our district.

He was seen as a cop who failed to perform his duties and favored the perpetrators of 2008 church attacks. He was seen pleasing his bosses by brutally assaulting the peaceful protesters

what a fall from grace for a 'IPS officer'!

It is a good decision that appointment of Sateesh kumar is stayed ,it was widely known that large no of false cases were filed against christian's on his behest when he was the SP .It is better that such officers are put in places were there is less of involvement with general public .

He must have been changed person now and want to serve the people in better manner. But let him reveal to the public from where he had got the order to go in to the church, drag elderly people out and beat them black and blue. They even beat people mercilessly when they were going out from the church in line with out making any noise.
