Mangaluru, May 22: Doctors, paramedical professionals and medical students from across the district and even Udupi on Monday May 22 marched in protest against the recent assault and kidnap of a doctor, and demanded the government and the authorities concerned to take measures to ensure safety of doctors.

On May 16, Dr Abhijith Shetty of Yenepoya Medical College and Hospital was allegedly dragged from the ICU, assaulted and kidnapped by a mob after a patient who was admitted to the hospital passed away. He was rescued by his colleagues with the help of the police, and three accused have been arrested so far.

The protest called by Mangaluru chapter of Indian Medical Association (IMA) began with a march from Dr Ambedkar circle to Nehru Maidan here. Thousands of professionals and students from medical and paramedical sectors expressed their ire over the assault and demanded justice. The partial bandh saw closure of medical services in the city, but emergency services and ICUs functioned normally.

Addressing the protest, IMA Mangaluru president Dr Raghavendra Bhat said, "In the year 2009, law was formalised making attacks on doctors a non-bailable offence, and punishable as a criminal case, but so far not even one culprit has been charged under this law. There have been several attacks on doctors including in Dharwad where an MLA thrashed a doctor, but now he has become a minister.

"Every now and then politicians pass suggestions that doctors should speak to patients, but none of them has raised a voice against such assaults. This is shameful. Such incidents disturb our profession and we are unable to work fearlessly. So far only eight people have been arrested in Yenepoya assault case, where are the others?" he questioned.

"Mangaluru being a medical hub, this is a big insult to our proffession. It should never repeat. The government is sleeping and we need to wake it up. This is for the first time that we are gathering in such large numbers. This unity should last," he added.

Pro chancellor NITTE University Dr Shantharam Shetty said, "We have gathered in large numbers on a sad note when of our colleagues was manhandled and humiliated by 40 men. We need to tell the general public and the politicians how pained and saddenend we are as medical fraternity. This has been a peacefull protest as only outpatient departments have closed. Today we showed our strength by gathering in large numbers. We treat patients as our brothers and sisters, then how can we be negligent? It is not the relatives of patients but goons who come in and manhandle doctors."

The protesting doctors led by IMA also submitted a memorandum to the DC urging for quick investigation into the Yenepoya case and measures to prevent such incidents in future.

Doctors and management representatives from various private hospitals, including Dr K R Kamath, Fr Richard Coelho, Fr Rudolph, Dr Ananth Prasad, Dr Divakar Rao, Dr Bharath Shetty, Dr Sathish Bhat and others were present.

No nurse should support such protest cos no docter stands for nurses nor mangmnt , ask any nurse her payment u vl know how is this business. Hod vl b given target for a year anytng earned above target is shared equaly by management & doctrs, no gvt vl question them u vl not find any doctrs standing in atm lines cos bank officials vl deal to them personally. Doctors earn lakhs at the end of the month but dedicated Paramedical staffs who worked 10 times more then docter earns only 10 to 12000. So sorry for Paramedical staffs the way they r treated vry unfair vry underpaid. Eventough law pases no management cares to follow..

My sincere request to general public not to harm doctors. At any given situation the doctors try their best to save the patient.Multifactorial causes will decide the out come of the disease progression or regression.
A doctor sacrifice s all his life time to achieve and then as he practices. it's understood that learning is his integral part of life and he learns from cradle to grave,no matter what comes. The bills you pay hospital need not reach the doctors. They get only a small part ,and when it comes to saving somebody's life I have seen doctors gearing to contribute towards the benefit of the patient specially poor ones.
It is shame on mankind for such an insane act of hurting doctor. In future people will think twice before choosing to become a doctor.

Why do Doctors get beaten often now? Who is at fault Doctors or Patients? Though I would say Doctors are not fault most times , the public anger is on the rise against Doctors. People think doctors are all out to make cash. They feel Doctors are only interested in making money , This is not actually true Though there are elements in Doctor community who are only after money I would certianly say from my experience most Doctors are now adays honest and sincere. Most doctors work hard and work for betterment of pateints. So I feel we must respect Doctors and appreciate the services that they provide to society. Long back my relative had acar accident and there was injury to chest. He was admitted to a nirsing home. The Doctors there looked after him so well and i have seen myself how hard doctros worked By ignoring sleep they were working for the partient. Because of their hard work the patient survived . This incident left a great mark on my mind. I feel all Doctors are good people. We must respect doctors. We must always cooperate with them. Otherwise it will be difficult in society

I believe like on good old days.... Doctors are still like GOD ...... but since as a medical student they pay hefty donations and spend lot of money on ... so just to recover that huge amount of money they are forced to prescribe unnecessary medicine, test or even surgery ... so please understand

How do you know that doctors prescribe unnecessary investigations or medicine???.Do you have any knowlegde of medicine for making such comments. Let me make it clear to you it takes 5.5 years of MBBS + 3 yrs of MD/MS to become a doctor. After acquiring that knowledge only a doctor gives the best possible treatment to the patient. We spend nearly a decade of our life to become a doctor. So without any such knowledge or experience how can you say that doctors prescribe unnecessary things. Do you know the rationale behind the drug being prescribed. You may come up with some answers after googling. But mind you Medicine is not mathematics where 1+1 =2, each disease behaves differently in differnt patient so is the treatment.Medicine is a science of uncertainity and an art of probability. So dont loose talk about doctors without knowing the facts.Little knowledge is a dangerous thing. Never judge the doctors' treatment without medical knowledge.

No doctor would do unecessary surgery or tests. Do not pass comments like this and do not talk ill of doctors. I am reading comments demeaning the profession which is unfortunate.
Medical field is not simple as most people think or as shown in the movies.
it involves rigorous training for several years and subsequently experience guides the profession.
let me put forth some facts
    1. Health is the responsibility of the state and central government. illness arises out of multiple factor such as poverty, lack of safe drinking water, sanitation and so on. Many diseases arise from the unhygienic living. Doctors have little role and is at personal level.
    2. The pubic health system is for prevention and early treatment and has never concentrated on tertiary care to the extent it should be addressed. governments spend about 1.5% of GDP for health. ( Srilanka, Bangaldesh governments spend 3-4 times the more) of this 30 to 40 % is ineffective spending due to various reasons including corruption at high levels. There fore people concerned about poor patients should question the government.
    3. In the absence of tertiary care facilities in the government hospitals poor patients are forced to go to private hospitals . kindly advise governments, local politicians to improve facilities in t respective areas.
    4. Cost of treatment is directly proportional to the delay in reaching for treatment. The health seeking is late in among economically poor sections and when they reach late definitely the cost is high.
    5. Patients question excessive investigations. They also question why investigations are not done in cases where early diagnosis is the key for survival. Investigation is double edged sword. Many times investigations are done to establish normalcy.
    6. Medical education is expensive, yes large number of medical colleges are owned by influential politicians. How many of us question them?
    7. Choosing a doctor or hospital is patients choice. having made the choice by yourselves why blame the system?
Hope this information helps to understand complexity.

In this country where the reservations are at the max , many won't get opportunity to get in to medical profession. To train a medical graduate and a specialist it needs at least 1 crore including infrastructure. Government pays in crores in govt medical colleges . Don't think it's run by the fees paid by merit students only. Private colleges needs funds for the infrastructure which can be balanced by few seats who pay high fees. Even if one pays and gets seat he or she has to pass the exam to become doctor it's not easy what u think . Please comment sensibly .

I really feel sad when people behave like this and kidnap a doctor and try to push him of ullal bridge .This is a sad incident Dr was kidnapped at midnight when on duty and was dragged into a van and taken to ullal bridge However the police of Mangalore alerted and he just escaped the throwing of bridge .The public must realise doctors can't save every patient .please do not harass doctors. They are your friends . They want to help you in health related issues.Do not harass and trouble them. To tell the truth I owe my life to doctors.i had pulmonary embolism after my delivery. My doctor diagnosed and treated the problem well and treated . I survived. So I personally always place doctors high in my mind and I feel sad when doctors are treated like this. I feel sad.I feel we must respect doctors and never look down on them .The crimins who kidnapped the doctor and tried to throw him of the bridge at ullal needs to be condemned and they must be punished. Dear Mr. D'Cunha,
I pity you and the others who think like you. It is just another reminder for us of the kind of patients that we have to put up with. Fortunately, you are less than 1% of them. Despite, we continue to care and treat every patient the same. It is very unfortunate to have people like you who think that their 'google search' results of one patients accounts or their 'application of mind' as you claim to be far more superior to the 10 - 15 years of medical education and innumerable experience. But still, we do not stop caring or treating you.

Medicine is a science, we are not magical healers. We apply the science to help treat you with the knowledge we have acquired. Being in this profession does not give you super natural powers. Every person in this profession sacrifices a lot to serve it. They sacrifice their sleep, their personal life and family life in the service of the profession. Getting into the profession may be a choice, but once you are in it, you dont have any and you have to put in all efforts. It hurts me to see some people say that it is a business, which only a person who is in this profession can understand. Listening to few comments, I wonder whether I should still continue with my profession or are any of my sacrifices worth it? But then, we have taken an oath, a sacred oath which might mean nothing to you and ony we can relate to.

I humbly request you to not redicule the profession without knowing anything about it.

Dear Dr from UK, Don't give us your lecture about how holy your profession is and you are doing the service to mankind! If you really wanted to serve you wont go to UK come to villages here in India and serve the poor. Its nice to sit in a luxury of west and preach ...
Now coming back to doctors in India...
    * All doctors here are on commission. For every medicine they prescribe for every test they order they get a cut.
    * 90% of the child birth in Mangalore are Cesarean, because there is big money involved. Please check your sisters, daughters cases you will know the truth.
    * Go to any hospital, immediately unwanted tests are done, we have to use influence of known doctors to stop that. I have done that. Once my father was admitted for different reason, when I was not there they gave some threatening story about his heart condition and even got him ready for surgery. I had to literally pull him out. He is till fine after 3 years of that incident. Lucky I had a close friend doctor who is a cardiologist.
    * They have no relationship with the patients. Check the clubs and bars after 10 PM filled with doctors.
    * They never give you receipt on any transactions. They are the biggest black money hoarders. They made a big noise during the demonetization. Luckily they all knew the bank managers and were able to rescue their looted money.
    * 95% of the doctors with PGs bought the seats in medical colleges. All the brilliant ones manage only 'non clinical' subjects so those brilliant students are not going to treat you ever. You have to be served by these black money barons. They have to recover their 4 Cr by some or the other means. With the introduction of NEET things are going change, lets see how many of these current MBBS will get the PG seats.

I know most doctors get upset reading all these, I agree there are some excellent doctors, Dr BM Hegde is one such great doctor, but all these doctors hate him because he knows the truth an. Doctors need to change their attitude.

Because of few culprits, it is not good to take a march on road by closing the medical services to common people. Anyhow, Police case already been registered, it’s up to the police department to take action to prevent such untoward incidents in future. Doctors should be spared to protest such a way by disturbing the traffic and normal human life. Doctors just concentrate on how to save lives of human by being generous not stingy. We know it is a respectable profession, with hard work and commitment only a person can become doctor, that does not mean that they have to throw away the ethnics to make money. We are not generalizing but due to some mean doctors, whole fraternity is blamed.

Its Sad being manhandled by Public. But These Doctors actually mint a lot of money of innocent middle class to poor people. By asking them to take all sorts of test. And also they give medicine which is harmful in long run.
Its time for Government to step in and make all private hospital under goverment scanner and provide concession rate and any Bill which exceeds more than 10,000INR must be monitered and necessary action has to be taken if doctors has misguided the Patients.

Why don't u start a free hospital and give all ur earned money to poor and needy. When u can't do that why should tat doctor who spends more than 10years of life studying only about medicine and expertise himself to treat ignorant patients like u.i don't even know how educated u are. Its easy to say doctors take money, yes they take money for the treatment they are giving, for the Knowledge they have gained. And when a doctor see a poor patient he never thinks of money he always try to reduce charges. But he can't do this to every patients he sees no. People are ready to pay 500 to 1000rs to a barber ......... Who is so much skilled according to educated fools....... And when a doctor charges 300-500 you feel it's too much......even if u pay a barber 50 - 100 to for a hair cut and even if u pay a mechanic who repairs a stupid bike 100-200rs....... Or 3000-5000 for a freaking car service....... Then paying 300-500as consultation fees is too less I guess....... And mind u local uneducated goon, India is the cheapest country compared to all developed country in terms of providing medical care....

Its funny how people like you are ready to pay
Almost a crore for a house or apartment
    5 lakhs for a car.
10,000 a night to stay in a five star hotel.
3 to 4000 for dinner in big restaurants.
You even pay 500 rs for coke and popcorn at a movie theatre...
But when a doctor charges you 10,000 to save your life he is looting you.

Don't you get a Salary of more than a lakh in middle east. Why don't you donate half of it for Health of poor people in India. You want doctors to treat for free right. So you to do your part. Talking is very easy. For once do something for others in your life

It is better for go for Ayurvedic, Homeopathic, Unani, Herbal, Physiotherapy or Acupressure treatments whenever possible as those are far more safer and cheaper. If a doctor of Allopathy prescribes wrong medicine or a surgeon makes mistakes during surgery, it will be disastrous for the patient and the patient may have to suffer lifelong for the mistake of the doctor.

Haha Isabel , no one is stopping you from trying Ayurvedic or unani treatment . Allopathy is evidence based treatment . So much of research and clinical trials are to be passed for the drug to come to the market . So you have to choose . Whether you want something which is proven to be beneficial for your health at a price or settle for something whic is cheaper . The irony is soo many patients during the initial stages of the disease go for other treatments and when the disease has progressed so much that when even allopathic medicines are of not much use they come to hospitals . Then abuse the doctor saying he didnot "cure" , he was "negligent". And now the new thing they're sending for unnecessary tests . You think it is unnecessary but trust me miss Isabel human body is not like a machine where you can say to just correct the thing that's bothering you . It might be just a presentation of something which maybe progressing beneath . If the root cause is not treated then the patient will never get better . It's for making sure that you don't have something else . You can still say I don't want to undergo the tests and give it in writing that you refused no one is gonna force you to take it . Until so called educated people like you don't get it . Society will never progress
And one more thing when you said it's expensive , No one is forcing you Togo to corporate hospitals , Our government has invested so much in health care which you can easily avail by making use of government facilities like OBC or district hospitals . Trust me there you will get free treatment . And if you want to go to a corporate setup and then want to get it for the price of Ayurveda it's like going to Taj and abusing taj people saying " I want it . That street vendor gives it for this price . And start abusing them for not giving an item at the price of a street vendor. Just look at how stupid you look . And ps health care is much much cheaper than other countries . You can verify 🙏🏻

    Doctors save lives
They are not god's but human beings
    They can't save all
    They can't please all
Some may survive some may die despite best efforts
Goons shouldn't be allowed to harass doctors
Doctors must be allowed to work freely
It's bad to attack z doctor
It's even worse to kidnap him
It's a crime when you try to throw a doctor of ullal bridge
It's an unpardanobale crime to beat a doctor
    Doctor is next to God
    Respect them
    Do not hit them
Do not try to drown them in nethravathi river of ullal bridge
    There's a god who's watching
For every criminal will get punished
However big she or he is
Let's pray that no doctor gets attacked in future
Lets kneel down before God and hope no doctor gets attacked
Let's wish that no hospital gets vandalised
Let there be good security for doctors
I pray for the betterment of doctors working atmosphere

I would say that first doctors should respect the patients and their family. When a dear one dies in the hospital bed, the doctors should politely break the news to the family.

No doctor is allowed to speak or behave rudely with the family of the patient who has lost his life. Doctors profession is a noble one. So please doctors keep the respect and the dignity.

On another note, I fully agree that the assault on doctors is condemnable. But what if the doctor speaks defiantly to the dead patient's family, instead of consoling and convincing them that they tried their level best.

Doctors do their best to save patient's lives. There is no doubt about it. But giving or taking life is in God's hands. The least that a doctor can do is be polite. In this case, I heard that the doctor spoke defiantly to the patient's family.

My question: In some circumstances, is not the doctor's rude behaviour condemnable???

Its the duty of government to provide free health care to public. When thats not happening private care thrives. Since government cant provide health care people depend on private care So the government must provide full protection to doctors in duty. Let there be good protection by government in all hospitals and who ever attacks a hospital or doctor must be punished with severe punishment so that no one will evr do such a henious crime and the culprits deserve no mercy whatsoever

    2) ive seen a few private opds give bills and even if they don't what should the bill say "my expertise cost rs...". I'm assuming u knew that when you came there. And if u mean the bill for medicines, the pharmacy does provide that

Sir, doctors don't deal with bills unless it's their private practise. Doctors are trained to treat patients and work to get them to best possible state of health. If we start putting our heads into everything then we won't be able to do our work properly. Even then we try our best to help those in need at the best possible rate. When Pharma companies and surgical supplies people don't reduce the price of their commodities, how can we charge you less for cost incurred to our hospital on facilities provided to you.

    Dear ERdoctor, Mangalore,
I appreciate your commitment of 36hrs shift in the emergency room today. The world is beautiful, because there are many good people are living on this earth. Similarly, doctors are noble, life savers, because they sacrifice their evenings, family time for saving other lives.

You may or may not agree with me; " you do 100 good things, no body remembers. But if you do one mistake, nobody forgets.". A grateful person, always appreciate goodness.

But when money comes first than service, accumulation of wealth is more important than offering services, saving life; the so called hospitals who are supposed to save life, have become business hub, then: one will wonder, is the hospitals really care for patients or only care for money. Is our hospitals first ask to deposit money in order to save life or they save life first and then charge the fees.

Let the humanity, service quality, nobility prevail in the hospitals and with the doctors. God bless all the doctors and their patients.
