Mangaluru: Assault, abduction of doctor - Medical fraternity calls for bandh on May 22

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (ANK)

Mangaluru, May 20: IMA Mangaluru and all the allied medical and paramedical fraternity will hold a protest on Monday May 22 to condemn the assault and abduction of a senior surgeon and a senior lady nursing staff by a mob at Yenepoya Medical and Dental College, Deralakatte recently, informed president of Indian Medical Association (IMA), Mangaluru Dr K R Kamath.

Dr Abhijith Shetty, assistant professor at Yenepoya Medical College and Hospital, was allegedly dragged by a mob of nearly 40 people, assaulted and kidnapped in the early hours of May 16, following the death of a 65-year-old patient from Kinya who had been admitted to the hospital. The doctor was rescued by his colleagues with the help of the police near the Ullal bridge, and three persons were arrested.

Follwing the incident, the medical fraternity in the city and surrounding places led by the IMA has called for a bandh on May 22.

Addressing a press meet here Saturday May 20, Dr Kamath said, "The protest march will be carried out from Jyothi circle to the DC's office and a memorandum will be submitted to the DC. It will also involve closure of all elective services in all hospitals in the district. Emergency services including casualty, emergency OT (operation theatre) and casualty/ICU will continue uninterrupted."

Condemning the assault and abduction of the doctor, he said, "It is unfortunate that on May 16 a senior doctor was assaulted and dragged, pushed into a vehicle and abducted, and even a senior nursing staff was also abused. The doctor was threatened that he would be thrown into the Netravati river. He later realised that he had been robbed of his gold chain and wrist watch. While assaults on doctors have happened in the past, the problem has only increased in gravity, despite assurance by the authorities and higher-ups. It has tarnished the name of the city and the entire region, which is otherwise a very popular destination for both medical education and healthcare."

Dr Anantha Rao Prasad said, "This is the first time I have come across such an incident in my professional career. Mangaluru is known to be one of the safest place in the country but these types of anti-social elements are creating difficulties to our profession. We will not be able to do our work fearlessly. We need to educate people that we are not god and we cannot ensure success in our treatment each and every time. The health condition of a patient could keep on changing, but that does not mean the doctors have not treated them with all care."

Dr Diwakar Rao, Dr G K Bhat, Dr Guruprasad and others were present.

public should not think that doctors are magicians to cure everything.
If such incidents are not nipped right now, there may be no future for doctors. No one will dare to become a doctor.
Sadly our community is tolerant to all diseases but intolerant to doctors.

The basic mistake done here the costly treatment in ICU was given free. People do not relaise the value anything which is given free. If they had been charged they would have accepted the death better!

The patient was a 65 year old man with IHD and severe sepsis. He was treated free. No money was charged. Doctors here treated well with ventilation and all other measures . The outcome in this case was bad Despite this the public did not realise the value of effort that the Doctors put in, Very bad. The DOctor was mercelessly kidnapped and they wanted to throw him of the bridge in Ullal. What shoudl I say? Are these people human beings or animals? They seem to have no human values in them They are worse than animals who do not have any moral values. A horrible incident. If Doctors are treated this way then Doctors can not work properly. I support the Bandh and hope the people behave ratinaolly towards doctors. As seen interview many so called social workers nowadays interefere in the work of Doctors and take adavantage of the situation Their aim is not social work but to trouble and sometimes even to extract money form Doctors. I wholeheartedly condemn this incident and reauest all the public to behave rationally towards doctor community. Incidences like this demoralise the medical community and make the situation very hard for Doctors to work in a peaceful way. I hope the public realise the value of services that doctor community provide the society and behave rationally and help to support the community in general. This is a henious crime and I hope such incidences do not happen again in future. I feel sad I feel bad and I am going mad when I hear these kind of criminal incidences where a innocent hard working doctor who was attending to a case midnight id dragged out kidnapped and attempts are made to push him into a river of Ullal bridge. Luckily for the DOctor here the police and collegues chased the van and caught the culprits before he was pushed of the river. A very sad incident. I hope the medical bundh is a sucess and such incidences do not happen in future. Human life is precious and a doctors life also must be cared for.

While severely condemning the incident, medical docs going on strike is least expected from a so called noble profession!!

BTW, is the very reputed sr doc who, ( as per news reports), very recently got trapped in a 15 lac "HONEY TRAP" participating in this agitation?????

I condmen the violence on the doctor. Its a heinous act and unpardonable crime. But reacting to that buy shutting down medical facilities I feel is inhumane. Denying treatment by ocnducting will bring more hatred towards doctors. Doctors as such are somehow looked down as money mongers in modern day scoiety. I feel attack on doctors is bad but reacting to that conducting a shut down I feel is bad. Medicine is a noble profeesion and they should not conduct bandhs etc

Assault on doctors, bankers, police ,bus drivers, are heard now a days but govt is not so serious about the ill effects. On 10th of this month a customer illegally entered the banking hall of Vijaya Bank Navalgund branch and assaulted a officer and misbehaved with Branch Head in from to several customers. After loud protest by local union leaders and staff bankers the accused was arrested on third day.Its a matter of great concern that law enforcing officials to show lethargy in dealing with such things.Politicsl interference is also making the situation worst as our political leaders always think of votes and not welfare of the soceity at large.Well done local

Surely, it was sad that a 65 year old man is dead... Even if due to medical error, this type of violence against the Doctors and Paramedics must be condemned and severely punished. Mob attacks are getting common in our country presently. This must stop. The same Doctors may have saved lives and provided best treatment to hundrends.. all we say to them is Thank you Doctor saab..... We must realize that a very reasonable medical errors are inevitable, this happens in other countries as well. But, the people there may not do this heinous act of causing harm to Doctors by following mob violence. Extreme shame on all of them who participated in this crime against medics. .

Sir will u take responsibility of doctors security who provides healthcare? The strike is to sensitise the government to ensure security for hospitals and doctors . Imagine your treating doctor when u are in serious illness get beaten up by some anti social elements and not able to attend u,.will u afford to risk your life? Blaming docs for negligence in every incidence and attacking has become fashion . Time may come docs won't take risk to save patient from death bed thinking if patient doesn't survive he will be under risk of an attack .!!!

Arrested 3 men--Asif, Naufal and Uwais, and are looking for the driver..

What about the rest 40 in the mob ? ..... must identify and make them infamous.. so that the medical fraternity will stay away from treating such uncivilized rogues who have the audacity to beat up the doctors who treat them.. Such thugs need only one knid of treatment, helicopters.

While condemning the assault on the Doctor and the nurse in the severest form call for "Bandh" should be made illegal in any form. Public, schools and businesses should not suffer for some third party affairs at the same time victims of any crimes have all the legal right to get justice and can demonstrate thier protest in a peaceful manner in the public without disrupting peace and order as a last resort to aggravate thier grievance for public sympathy if justice is not served.

Assaults on doctors are increasing at an alarming rate.Nothing is being done about it.The doctors have to make themselves heard & assaults have to stop.A mega stir was very much needed. If you place yourself in Dr.Abhijith.s place you will know.Imagine, late hours of the night you are doing your best to save a critically ill patient & the patient still dies..next thing you know is you are attacked, dragged down six floors to the gate, pushed into a vehicle and kidnapped. How would you have felt Mr.Swamy? If not sensibly at least think humane.Shame on you!
