Udupi: Konkani movie fans flock to theatres as 'Sophiya' hits screens

Udupi, May 19: Latest Konkani movie 'Sophiya' produced under the banner of Janet Productions was released at multiplex theatre Inox, Manipal on Friday, May 19, with the parish priest of Our Lady of Fathima Church, Perampalli Fr Romeo Lewis lighting the ceremonial lamp to mark the occasion. He also blessed and wished success to the entire film crew.

In his inaugural address, Fr Romeo said, "A new wave is coming in film industry for Konkani movies. The production teams of all films have been playing their parts in increasing the richness of Konkani language. Kilms will keep Konkani culture alive and thriving. 'Sophiya' promotes the local culture and brings a degree of happiness. Producing films in local language is not easy since it has limited audience and market. In this regard, producer Janet Noronha has done a remarkable job taking all risks for promoting Konkani language.

"I thank members of the film crew and audience for making this film a success. Let us enhance Konkani culture and language through this movie," he said.

Parish priest of St Pius Church, Palimar, Fr Charles Noronha, Sr Lenita, Fr Fredrick D'Souza, parish priest, Christ Church, Manipal were present.

Speaking to daijiworld, producer Janet Noronha said, "I had a great experience working with the film team for the first time. Every viewer is appreciating the team effort. It is technically far better than any other Konkani film. It has set a new milestone in Konkani film indutry. This was the second movie for Elton Mascarenhas. He has done a great job in this film. This is an entertainment film and the entire family can watch it together.

"People have given good ratings for the technical aspects and quality of shooting in the film. We are getting requests from USA, UK, Israel and Auckland to release this move over there. We have decided to release the movie in USA on July 8. The release of the movie in Canada will take place in August and other places will be scheduled soon.

"There is no action scene but film has good humour and emotional scenes. The film reflects coastal family life and its helping nature in difficult times. Every character of the film has put his or her best efforts in the film. It is a complete family package," she added.

Lead actor of the movie Elton Mascarenhas said, "This is my second movie. Here my character is funny, mild and emotional. It is completely different movie fom the first 'Noshibacho Khell'. In my first movie, public extended their full support and I hope everyone appreciates this film too."

Esther Noronha has played the lead actress' role in the film.

The positive feedback was evident on the happy faces of the audience. They expressed satisfaction about the film and appreciated the songs.

The movie was released for the first time at Prabath theatre in Mangaluru on Friday, May 12. It is running successfully in all theatres in Mangaluru, Moodibidri and Karkala.

Elson Hirgana compered the inaugural function.

    What are Konkani movies called. English we have Hollywood, Hindi we have Bollywood , Kannada we Have Sandalwood. Is there any name for Konkani movies . Daiji can keep a contest for this and the best name should be selected. Hats off to the the directors and producers of Konkani movies. Keep producing more movies. All the very best

    This movie is far better than Noshibancho Khel.
    In Nosibancho Khel acting was good.

    There are two songs Hindi songs dubbed to konkani.
    We have many konkani singers. New konkani songs should have produced for sophiya movie.
