Mangaluru: Red Building lane residents demand withdrawal of road widening project

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (SB)

Mangaluru, Mar 30: Ahead of the promised council meeting, the people of Kankanady-Valencia ward including residents of Red Building lane on Thursday, March 30 staged a protest over the road widening issue in their ward at Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC).

Addressing the protesters, member of action committee Antony Maxim said, "The council meeting will be held in a short while from now. We are staging protest here demanding the cancellation of the road widening project. Hence, we also request corporator Asha D'Silva to withdraw the road widening proposal."

"Around 95 percent of the houses in the lane will be under the threat of demolition if the project gets a green signal. This project should be cancelled immediately," he added.

Nirmala Suveer, Suveer Isaac, Ullas Rasquinha and P Vishawanath were present.

The residents are up in arms against the corporator over the road widening project that would expand the road to 30 ft (about 9 m). The residents claim that the project would affect a large number of families living in the locality. In a press meet recently, the action committee had alleged that a petition was 'doctored' to attest that the residents had demanded the road widening, and blaming the corporator for this, the committee had said that the project was thrust upon the residents even when they did not want it.

More details awaited.

A similar type of design was adopted by nantoor, kulshekar and padil corporators backed by selfish real estate people for personal gains. Short cut is a cut short to life.

    Readers,
Approx 4 years ago, our present corporator went house to house with a petition in hand over a MCC drainage facility approval. Until now the drainage facility is not come up nor there is no single noticeable development in the Red building area. some time ago over 6 months we learned that the petition was forged and manipulated resident signatures and same petitions was forged for road widening. are anyone allowed to forged resident signatures? hope we have sufficient road pass through two trucks at a same time. I still remember the day corporator came to our house she was nervous for committing sin over personnel gain?

    1) Hi for all the people who support 9 meter is 30 feet i.e if you have seen the road now there is almost 2 1/2 times wider means all people not only LOSE THEIR COMPOUND WALL BUT ALSO LOSE THEIR HOUSE, so this is the top story
    2) Well to all people who think we rebuilding people are against the development no we are not, we support development but not for 30 feet road,
    3) To all corporator supporters don't be fooled by her as we are now we have no sleep and peace, she took signature by telling man hole (drainage ) NOT FOR ROAD :( and submitted that signature for road widening
    4) again to all people who support, there are 2 major plots who WONT GET PERMISSION for big project until and unless there is 30 feet road by killing this read building lanes 95% house :(
    5) WHY PEOPLE SAY NO FOR 30 FEET here ?????? the lane does not connect anywhere its dead circle AND HEAVY VEHICLE can easily move (VIST YOUR SELF AND SEE ) ,i.e. you start from one end take a circle come back to same spot, in this circle there are houses left and right, so all this small people lose there house, once there is road all lose their house
    6) so why do they need ROAD for some rich project ? and on the foundation of poor peoples blood and sweat foundation ?
    7) Those who support this road widening, let us know HOW MUCH CENTS you have personally donated to road to make it wide ( Specially if road widening is a Scam not for development and for personal gain )
    8) if you don't BELIVE WHAT I SAY VIST YOUR SELF AND SEE BEFORE YOU SUPPORT THIS EVIL CORPORATOR
    9) ALL PEOPLE PLEASE HELP US AND SUPPORT US , YOUR SUPPORT CAN REALLY SAVE OUR LIFE

I feel sorry for the residents of this area, as the sites are small and the roads r also narrow. But also do think of those residents living in NH roads (where road widening was most welcome and necessary for development) who have lost their land and houses. People grumble when there is a traffic jam on main roads, but the interior roads always remain narrow and no one wants to part with their land.

There should be proper investigation. Why the residents not supporting road widening?
If the road widening not damaging their houses, they should proceed to widen the road. Also pay proper compensation to the residents who are going to loose their land. If it is dead end road then there is no need of widening. You can cannot blame corporator . Also the residents keep in mind if you dont want roads, you have no right to keep 4 wheeler at others place.

Let him stand for next corporation election and clear the matter. This would be my suggestion.Or unlikely BJP is taking the advantage of this and grabs the oppurunity

    Dear Nancy

Nobody has the right to say Evil Corporator as she is elected people representative.

1.Tell me the poor people house that intentionally built on the roadside ? can name that ?
2.Plots requires 30 % to issue licenses are false calim, IT IS NOT

3.Agree if anybody forged the provided documents, legally punishable
4.As far I know better than you in REDbuilding lane there are no poor people ? name those residing in Road side?? or identify the house
5.People stranded in protest are ready to demolish the house and ready to start new house approximately of value 50 K, (Do you know ?)
6.Accept that the houses are nearby roadside will not be demolished but rebuilding will have to leave his/her land as per MUDA.Agree if you accept this?

    Sir,
If you're new to the vicinity please take a tour of the lane and see for yourself the tiles roof homes of people near the roads. They're clearly visible. If you're familiar with the neighbourhood you should know who are the people. Poor or rich, nobody 'donates' their land with a 'daana patra' as the corporator has cited in her petition. This is a loop street not a highway to force residents to widen.
Secondly these homes are very old, not constructed recently. If so, why would anyone construct houses on the roadside??? Does it even make sense? Roads have been widened gradually over time whenever a resident renovates their house/compound. People in the yesteryears haven't foreseen matters and built homes. All over Mangalore there are houses like that. Can you blame residents of Car street saying why have you built houses on the road side?!!! Of you don't support the cause it's ok but please don't belittle the residents and their fight for justice.

    Neil,
Why do you need a 30ft road inside residential area?
Just because the corporator and the mayor has been promised a hefty commission by the contractor who proposed the plan, you just can not go ahead with demolition of more than 45 houses.
