Mangaluru: Angry residents of Kankanady-Valencia ward anxiously wait for council meeting

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (SB)

Mangaluru, Mar 29: The action committee of Kankanady Valencia ward residents who had protested over the issue of road widening in their ward demanded that the project should be scrapped keeping in mind the welfare of the residents.

Addressing a press meet here on Wednesday March 29, action committee member Antony Maxim said, "The existing road near Red Building lane has no connecting roads.

Around 150 families reside in this lane. This lane does not house any school, hospital, government offices or religious centres. A proposal for drainage facility in the lane was submitted by its residents in 2014. It was conveyed to them that the proposal was approved in a council and standing committee meeting in 2016. The town planning officials from the corporation visited for survey and there was no development on the issue then."

"Later, when a resident of the locality applied for the permission to build a new house, he was informed that as the road would be widened to 30 feet, he would not be granted the permission as per plan," he added.

He further said, "Some residents sought information on the road widening proposal through Right To Information (RTI) on October 10, 2016. They received a reply on November 29, 2016, which said that the residents themselves had demanded for road widening in 2014 through a petition. Upon verification, they learnt that the petition  submitted for the drainage was doctored and the same was turned into a petition demanding road widening. The residents are blaming that the corporator of the ward is involved in the fraud."

"On March 20 last week, we the residents organised a protest at MCC premises. As assured, Mayor Kavita Sanil visited and inspected the ward the very next day. On her  visit she found that if the road widens, 95 per cent of residents will land in trouble. She also assured us that the issue will be discussed in the upcoming council  meeting. The proposal was backed by the corporator also." he explained.

"But last week suddenly, the corporator changed her mind and told through media that she will go ahead on road widening. Also, she questioned the Red Building lane residents for their objection, while all other residents of the ward favoured the project. We are waiting for the council meeting which will take place tomorrow. Our  representatives are attending this meeting. All our hopes are on the Mayor. We believe she will give us justice. If not, we will continue our fight," he added.

Answering media persons query, committee member Meera Louis said, "The corporator has not called a single meeting of residents on the road widening project. She is not even answering residents' phone calls on seeking clarifications. We do not know why she is behaving like this."

Speaking to Daijiworld.com, a resident said, "There are a lot of areas in the ward which require better roads and other basic facilities. The corporator should give attention to those areas. If residents do not require a road, then why she is too adamant on that project?" he questioned.

Action committee president P Vishwanath K, Suveer Isaac, Ullas Rasquinha and Nirmala Isaac were present.

Very true, these cross roads r so narrow that it is difficult to navigate when a auto/small car passes thru, one has to get into a house compound to let the vehicle pass! Moreover most autos refuse to get into these lanes n charge extra!!

In an emergency, a 108 ambulance or fire brigade will not be able to enter these by lanes, but still one can find buildings n a line of independent houses just adjacent to these narrow lanes, who has given them permission/ completion certificates when basic regulations seem to have been openly flouted, but nobody seems to be bothered lest they lose a small piece of their land!!

Just imagine what sort of people buy houses in such places where basic emergency vehicles like a 108 ambulance or fire brigade cannot enter?? God save!!!

Bejai New Road, there are 7 Cross roads.
Except 3rd and 7th cross all roads are less than 6 feet I can say, only Rickshaw and small cars like Alto-800, Omni can be passed through and many residential Apartment building are come up from last 10 years in these roads, why corpoprators are not interested in widening these roads? how MCC gave permission to build so many residential apartments without basic infrastructure and where one Fire Brigade truck can not move easily????

I think this is the WAKE-UP time.

This is a lane next to the Karnataka Bank Naguri branch, a little further from Capitanio School and opposite Nethravathi Layout. It's right near the next bus stop after Pumpwell onwards the Bangalore highway.

Mr. Suresh, why the meetings held on close doors in some of the residents were action committee member told all 150 residents involved? One of the non resident announces her calls are not answered by corporator as she doesn't resides in this lane since years, on fear of loosing her half cents land she too fights, where absolutely non sence.By the way looks alike main member of the family is settling scores with corporator.

The high and mighty corporator Asha didn't answer the Mayor's calls when the mayor called her several times in front of the residents. Why she'll answer any other resident's call whether she lives there or not ... Half cent or half acre, everyone has a right to opine. Half cents people also pay taxes.

I WAS RESIDENT THIS PLACE 25 YEARS BACK ABOUT 22 YEARS, BORN & SCHOOLING/ COLLEGE DONE FROM THERE. THAT TIME ALSO ABOUT 150 HOUSES THERE AND NOW ALSO ALMOST SAME NUMBER. ROAD DEAD END NEAR AT MR. LOUIS DSOUZA HOUSE ALL BIG VECHCLE ARE U TURN AT THIS PLACE. SMALL CARS U TURN NEAR AT COSHABHAI HOUSE AND RETURNED SAME 20FT ROAD. THERE IS NO PROBLEMS THERE. NOW THE ROAD IS RING ROAD. THAT MEANS ALREADY DEVELOPED. ONE CAN GO UP NEAR MR ULLAS HOUSE & COME OUT NEAR MR. CHARLIE PINTO'S HOUSE WITHOUT ANY PROBLEMS. THE ROAD WIDENING REQUIRED IF ANY HOSPITAL/ GOVT OFFICE/ SCHOOL OR ANY BUILDER WANTS TO DO THE RESIDENTIAL COMPLEXS, THEN 30 FEET ROAD IS MUST.
MOREOVER THE PRESENT RESIDENTS ARE NOT APPRAOCHED NOR DESIRED FOR THE ROAD WIDENING. BUT MY LAST VISIT TO THAT PLACE SOME RESIDENT TOLD ME THAT THEY HAD GIVEN THE PETITION FOR DRAINAGE THROUGH CORPORATOR.
NOW THERE ARE THREE PRIME PLACES IN RED BLFG LANE , WHICH BUILDERS ARE PURCHASED FOR COMMERCIAL PURPOSE DENMOL/ BALLAL GUDDA & BACK SIDE AREA MR. LOUISAM HOUSE. NOBODY AGAINST DEVOLPMENT. THOSE WHO ARE STAYING HERE 5 CENTS AREA. THEY ARE AFFECTED MORE. CURRENT RING ROAD IS HELPS EVRYBODY.
ACTUALLY SIMON LINE REQUIRED 20 FEET ROAD. IN THAT AREA MORE THAN 500 FLY RESIDING . MOREOVER THIS ROAD IS CONNECTING TO NANTHOOR ROAD.

THE QUESTION IS WHY THE CORPORATOR INTERESTED ONLY RED BLDG LANE THAN OTHER
ADJ. ROAD REQUIRED MORE ATTENTION & DEVELOPMENT ?

I HOPE THE MAYOR WILL TAKE NECESSARY ACTION .

Well said Melvyn, totally agree with you, there is no problem in this lane for any vehicles. We are in Red Building from last 46 years, just because some 2 or 3 individuals want to make commercial projects does not mean majority of red building residents should suffer. The biggest of truck can go easily in this lane and return . So what are we widening the lane for.

These kind of issues are going on in several places around Mangalore. Mangalore is full of lanes and thin roads. There are so many issues regarding drainage and main road widening that cooperators need to address then focusing on individual lanes. It is either the last house of the lane who has enough money to bribe the cooperator or the cooperator wants to harass the people in that particular lane because of her personal grudge.

I am not against road widening. It is a must and it will help people with all means. But to be particularly behind a single lane is questionable.
Also the MCC building in Mangalore is in bad shape. Staff of certain department have no clue whats going on around them. Mangalore needs good corporators who can bring difference to the city. It is the people who need to vote for the right person who is literate and can handle peoples issues.

There is sufficient space for cars as well as lorry to ply on the road. People in power are selfish not the residents. Most people will lose their houses due to road widening. And all without a single penny for compensation. If one doesn'tknow the exact scenario one mustn't comment on the people being selfish or otherwise. There are vested interest and land mafia/power brokers involved behind the entire fiasco. Why else would the lane be proposed to be widened to exactly 30 feet???

My dear friend, so called land mafia will sell their land and can settle else. The actual need is for the residents widening of the road. Corporator has called the meeting and conveyed her message in the last resident meeting held at Mr.Ullas House. The so called press meeters why didn't attend and clarified the matter within ? why this show required?? By the way the it was recalled that leave your piece of land when you develop. The action committee member has in the fear to loose his land during construction of his new house. which was rejected in the municipality too.

@Manhoar, the lane is not only wide near the entrance but is wide throughout. Trucks move freely in this lane without any major issues. Yes sometimes when bricks or sand are unloaded it may block some vehicles for sometime. But the residents are used to this. The main purpose of corporator to widen the lane is to get commercial license and requirement is 30feet road. Out of 160 houses in the lane, 95% are satisfied with the current lane width, then why go against the will of the majority.

I agree with the widening of the roads .since this lane is belongs to full of houses with each of having limited land .And widening of road will loose their houses and they cannot build new house in their own property because Muncipality not allowing until unless you need to leave the required space for road widening .In this case i believe no one will agree to loose their land .
