Dharwad: Boy deemed dead comes to life minutes before cremation

Daijiworld Media Network - Dharwad (SP)

Dharwad, Feb 20: In a shocking incident which occurred on the night of Saturday February 18 at Managundi village in the taluk, a boy, who was being taken to the graveyard by pall bearers for funeral showed symptoms of being alive on the bier minutes before his body was to be consigned to flames.

The boy who came to life in this way was Kumar Maradi (16). It is learnt that Kumar had been bitten by a street dog some days back. As the wound was not properly attended to medically, the infection had turned critical. The boy had thereafter fallen unconscious due to septic shock. The parents had admitted him into a private hospital.

Kumar was treated at the hospital for four days but he neither regained consciousness nor showed any symptoms of recovery. The doctors therefore asked his parents to carry Kumar home. The parents, who observed that the breathing and pulse of the boy had stopped, concluded that he had died. They had made preparations for his funeral at the graveyard.

After he was placed on the bier and was being taken to the graveyard, the boy suddenly started to breathe. Noticing this, the parents and relatives stopped mourning, and rushed him to a private hospital at Hubballi. The boy is being treated in the intensive care unit of the hospital. This incident came as a shock for the entire village, who even now shudder at the prospects of conducting the funeral of a living being on account of erroneous assessment of his condition.

In the past there have been similar incidents when a person was resurrected back to life just on the verge of final processes being cleared ever. I call this rebirth. A couple of years ago, there was another incident when a doctor had declared a pregnant lady patient 'dead' since he couldn't get a feel of her pulse - this done in the presence of other doctors who too had ''confirmed and cleared'' the person for the final processes. I have heard some people terming this as a 'one-in-a-million-case' due to increase in the complexity of invasive and noninvasive procedures.

One thing is not heard of : This write-up says that the patient was kept in the hospital for 4 days but neither regained consciousness nor showed any symptoms of recovery - just goes to show that the doctor shelved off his responsibilities by discharging him INSTEAD OF keeping him under observation.

Even, I feel the doctor should be taken into task for not keeping the patient on observation and discharging him without a proper assessment. Who knows.. some people may die a death like this...

The parents waited too long to get him medical treatment. Since the doctor told them, no more treatment was possible, the parents took him home to die. They probably did not want to incur more expense at the hospital. No doctor pronounced him dead. It is a tragic situation .

A doctor should make the assessment of whether a person is dead or alive. A terminally ill patient is often discharged and sent home as further treatment is deemed futile (and much costly) by the attending physician. Here, relatives of the boy should have a doctor check on the boy before trying to dispose of his body.
