New Delhi, Sep 2: The Delhi Traffic Police has issued an advisory ahead of the BRICS motorcade rehearsal scheduled for Wednesday, September 2, with traffic restrictions and diversions expected on several major roads between 10 am and 3 pm.
According to the advisory, traffic diversions will be implemented at 22 points and across more than 35 roads during the rehearsal. Commuters have been advised to plan their journeys in advance, allow additional travel time and use public transport, particularly the Metro, to avoid congestion.
The traffic police has also urged motorists to follow designated diversion routes and instructions issued by traffic personnel. Emergency and essential-service vehicles will be given priority passage during the restrictions.
The BRICS Summit is scheduled to be held in New Delhi on September 12 and 13. Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping are expected to attend the summit.
BRICS, originally comprising Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa, has expanded in recent years with the inclusion of countries including Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran and the United Arab Emirates. The grouping seeks to strengthen economic cooperation among emerging economies and push for greater representation in global financial institutions.
Ahead of the summit, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar has called on BRICS nations to explore practical ways to address geopolitical tensions and disruptions to global trade while emphasising dialogue and diplomacy to resolve conflicts.
Speaking at a BRICS foreign ministers’ conclave in New Delhi, Jaishankar said the grouping was meeting at a time of significant changes in international relations, with ongoing conflicts, economic uncertainty and challenges involving trade, technology and climate shaping the global landscape.
The India-hosted meeting assumes significance amid concerns over the economic impact of the West Asia crisis, particularly disruptions to energy supplies caused by the ongoing conflict involving the United States, Israel and Iran.
BRICS currently comprises 11 major emerging economies and represents nearly half of the world’s population, around 40 per cent of global GDP and about 26 per cent of global trade. India is the current chair of the grouping and is hosting the annual summit in September.
