Mangaluru: 44 selected for finals of Kavita Trust Konkani poetry competitions

Mangaluru, Nov 10: Kavita Trust, which works for the promotion of Konkani poetry, conducted its annual Konkani poetry reciting competitions at six places of Karnataka and Goa recently. The competition which took off on September 3 was held at Panaji, Margoa, Mangaluru, Bantwal, Udupi and Moodbidri unitl October 25.

The competitions were Cha Fra DeCosta Memorial Second All Karnataka Konkani Poetry Reciting Competition for Children, sponsored by Nelson and Lavina Rodricks, and Fifth All India Konkani Poetry Reciting Competition for Youth, sponsored by Rohan and Lavita Monteiro.

A total of 220 participants took part in these competition which was held in two categories. This is the second year of the competition for children below the age of 15 years and the fifth year for youth between the age group of 15 and 30 years.

Altogether, 25 youth and 19 children were selected for the finals of the two competitions which will be held on January 10, 2016 at World Konkani Centre during Kavita Fest.

The finalists of the competition for children are Jenica D'Souza, Jessica D'Souza, Nishica Carlo, Rohan Pinto, Fiona Pereira, Salomi D'Souza, Shanwil D'Souza, Sushmita D'Souza, Vion Lobo, Aldon D'Souza, Nishel D'Almeida, Prithuma Monteiro, Shyna D'Silva, Wencita Dias, Lerisa D'Souza, Revon Dias, Rikita Saldanha, Veenal D'Sa and Sheavon Serrao.

The finalists of the competition for youth are Greeshma Veigas, Reema Lobo, Antara Bhide, Dattaraj Naik Evita D'Souza, Josmita Fernandes, Pradnya Tari, Suhel Madkaikar, Supriya Kankonkar, Sushmita Pai Kane, Vaishnavi Pai Cacode, Vruksha Karmali, Adline D'Souza, Frivita D'Souza, Shwetha Pai, Winson Lobo, Anishka Pradeep, Nikita Lotlikar, Shambhavi Sinai, Siddesh Tari,
Vishal Gaonkar, Lavita Pinto, Michelle Andrade, Mohammed Shuraim and Greshal Quadras.

The highlight of these competitions was that one could recite one's own composition or select any other poet's creation. The participants searched for poems, by surfing websites, referring books and in the process, read poetry and tried to understand it. Thus, it encouraged them to start learning poetry at a young age and become aware of various dialects of Konkani.

Entrepreneur Rohan Monteiro and his wife Lavita Monteiro and NRI Nelson Rodricks and his wife Lavina Rodricks have supported these competition since their inception.

Though registered in the year 2007, Kavita Trust had started its activities in 2001 in Dubai. It was founded by Sahitya Akademi awardee poet Melvyn Rodrigues. Kishore Gonsalves, Averyl Rodrigues, Victor Mathias, Andrew D'Cunha and William Pais are the trustees.
