Solar Bicycles: Easy on the Pocket, Friendly with the Environment

Solar Bicycles: Easy on the Pocket, Friendly with the Environment

Daijiworld Media Network – Bangalore (SP)

Bangalore, Feb 21: People who want to use clean renewable energy for their rides, have another option now. Unlike solar cars which are costly to use and maintain, the solar bicycles, aptly titled ‘Sun Cycles’ by its developors Subhadra Industries, are cheap and easy to maintain. What is more, the bicycles people are already using can also be transformed into solar bicycles.

These bicycles come with a 40 volts battery and two solar panels specially designed for the bicycles, a motor, and push buttons at the handle bars to regulate the acceleration, a controller, and a meter which gives reading of the speed of the bicycle.

Battery, controller, and solar panels, are fitted to the carrier of the bicycle. The panels absorb sun rays and transfer heat to the controller, from which it goes to batteries before getting retransmitted as solar power. From the controller, the power gets shifted to motor, which is fitted to the front wheel. The wheel rotates depending on the acceleration. As the hub of the front wheel is fitted with planetary gear system, it facilitates rotation of wheels by five times, enabling the bicycle to cover more distance.

Once the battery is fully charged, the bicycle can cover a distance of 25 km. The battery has to be replaced once every three years. It comes with a two-year guarantee. These bicycles can take a total weight of 90 kg.

The intending buyers have option of using either the big battery or the small one. The battery can also be charged with electricity in the absence of sun rays. These batteries can easily be dismantled or refitted. If the battery gets exhausted, the rider has the provision to use pedals to move forward. He also has the option of pedaling alongside motor, so that the rider does not feel the fatigue. He can totally depend on motor too for the ride, or alternatively, pedal his bicycle forward on his own. As the bicycle comes with normal parts, it can be repaired and its spares can be replaced at any of the bicycle repair shops, Subhadra Industries, which has produced this bicycle after a six-year long effort, claims.

Some of friends opinion is correct. Solar System is no doubt so costly. The Govt.s should encourage this type of inventions to reduce the cost. By this way atleast 10% people may depend on this and we can save Electricity and Petrol too...

It is a cheaper design,if company can alterate, but with a bit of more cost- is the solar panel on top as a roof and as a three weeler so it can protect the rider from sun & rain along with easy ride.

C Dsouza, Mangalore @ As per my understanding after look at the photo, it has the flexibility to fold the both Solar Panels together upright position while riding. Only we have kept the panels open during charging the battery. I believe, this is a great Idea...and people will like it...

Good way forward or otherwise USA can help India explore for oil free of cost. or request the Arabs to give it to us at a reasonable cost, which then will then ruin the arabs economy which means they wont buy American goods. We Indians dont have the luxury to make enemies like Americans can. We have billions of people to take care of with mere resources.

Today there are only two major economies USA and China, we have a long way to go before we catchup. Forget food we dont even have sufficient water in our major cities, bangalore for example, all the govt supplies is 50 liters of water a day TO A HOUSEHOLD = 10 toilet flushes in the USA. A solar bicycle a great Idea. The Solar panel can run along the bike instead of across and form a kind of a sun shade. A great way to get to work, college, market etc. and they are parked in the sun being charged all the time.

Congratulations to Subhadra Industries on their new product.
If we look at the growing population and the increasing demand for transport facilities, we really need to have a revolutionary change is our land transport system. We must look at the option to produce vehicles with the capacity to carry a family or at least 4-5 people.

In fact, it is possible with a concept change of move with advantage to minimize the costly energy and to reduce the air pollution and sound pollution. Please see http://www.sparktherise.com/discussions.php?topicId=1571 and 15 other posts in the same site about the new concept vehicles.

Excellent. But practically this would be a flop. With the solar panels jutting out on both sides, it would be very difficult to ride on crowded streets, solar panels get damaged easily and they are expensive. Good idea, but not feasible at all.

It is better to have additional wheels on the sides behind, because if the cycle falls down then the battery will go for a toss.
