Mangalore: City Revels in Rich Folk Arts, Beach Activities on Day 3 of NYF

Mangalore, Jan 15: The third day of the 17th National Youth Festival on Saturday January 14 was filled with fun and frolic, together with a delectable treat of cultural programmes and fine displays of skill and talent at various venues in the city.
One of the centres of attraction during the 17th National Youth Festival is Panambur Beach. Weekend visitors are thronging the beach which has speed boating, camel rides, boat rides, and horse rides as the chief attractions.
The ‘Masak Sumani’ folk dance of Tripura was yet another highlight, held at Lourdes Central School. It is a dance performed by tribals during their hunting expeditions. They use a sickle called ‘dabra’ to kill deer and put its meat in a vessel called ‘Hokhai’. This was a unique dance performed by eight girls and four boys dressed in special costumes. The group began their journey from Tripura on Sunday January 7 and reached Mangalore on Thursday January 12.
‘Dollu Kunita’, an art of Karnataka, was lauded by all and was performed on the third day of the youth festival. It was held at TMA Pai Hall by a team from Shikaripura, Shimoga district.
A dance performed during the rainy season by Manipuris also received good response. ‘Musalke’ dance from Goa, ‘Sanapa’ folk dance from Delhi, ‘Dandiyaras’ by Dadar team, ‘Sigari’ dance by the Orissa team, ‘Parapujya’ from Chattisgarh, ‘Chav’ dance by Jharkand girls, ‘Thaptam’ folk dance by the team from Tamil Nadu, and the ‘Bihu’ dance by the Assam team also received thunderous applause. On Sunday January 15, more teams will perform folk dances.
The day culminated with a rocking performance by 'Euphoria' at Mangala Stadium.
