Mangalore, Oct 27: What makes a man great is that he is remembered by generation after generation. A get together of the children of the great grand children and relatives of Rev Dr Hermann Moegling was organized at Bishop Jatthana Hall, Balmatta, on Thursday October 27.

Herman Mogling (1811-1881), a German missionary from the Basel Mission, who spent most of his life working in the Western regions of the state is credited as the publisher of the first ever newspaper in Kannada called ‘Mangalooru Samachara’ in 1843.
Dr B M Hegde, former vice chancellor, MAHE, was the chief guest on the occasion. Lauding the effort of Dr Moegling, he said that the missionary had great vision which led him to accomplish the mission.

Dr Hegde added that at a time when there was no proper transport system he came here and, though technology was basic, with his hard work he made it possible for himself to write in alien language, i.e Kannada. He was the true symbol of secularism who loved his own religion and also respected others’ religion.

In his message to the audience, Dr Hegde said that education should make minds which lead to universal brotherhood.

Dr Honey Cabral, principal KTC, secretary KACES, in his presidential address, said that Dr Moegling shared information to enhance one’s outlook towards various aspects of Indian tradition and culture. He said that Dr Moegling lived simply by doing hard work, and he is remembered always by hearts and minds because of his great vision.

Dr Hegde, also released the books, ‘Eine Reise In Die Religionen’ in German, and ‘A Journey Into Religions’ in English. Dr Albert Frenz is the author of this book. Dr D R Sadananda, treasurer, and Sandeep Theophil, PRO of KACES, were present.

Ruth Preethika performed ‘Pushpanjali’ Bharatanatyam dance to welcome all. A cultural extravaganza followed the stage programme by school children.
