Daijiworld Media Network

Thiruvananthapuram, Aug 20: Kerala government has decided to prepare school textbooks in Konkani language to teach Konkani-speaking students, a minor linguistic community in the state.

As part of the plan, the State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT) organised a two-day workshop here today for the preparation of textbooks in Konkani, a release said here. A number of experts including scholars from the ‘Bharathiya Konkani Bhasaha Vikas Sabha’, ‘PG Kammath Foundation’, ‘All India Konkani Parishath’ and ‘Konkani Language Institute’ participated in the programme.

A guideline for teaching of Konkani and syllabus for fifth, sixth and seven standard would be drawn up by the workshop, it said. SCERT Director Prof KA Hashim, who inaugurated the workshop, said Konkani textbooks for fifth standard would be prepared this year. The textbooks for other classes would be prepared in the coming years.

The launching of a course titled “Diploma in Language Education” for the training of Konkani teachers was also under consideration, he said. There are around six lakh Konkani people in the state.
