Charmadi Ghat: Proposal to cut over 7,500 trees; environmentalists seek public scrutiny

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru

Mangaluru, Sep 22: Around 7,540 trees in approximately 39 acres of reserved forest land are proposed to be felled as part of the widening of National Highway 73 in the Charmadi Ghat region. Environmentalist Vivek M of Mangaluru has submitted a representation to senior officials of the central and state forest departments, urging that the proposal be subjected to public scrutiny before the trees are felled.

In his representation, Vivek provided details of the project and stated that the principal chief conservator of forests and head of forest force of Karnataka had recommended in-principle Stage-I approval on September 10.

According to the site inspection report of the deputy conservator of forests, Mangaluru Division, the proposed road passes through a tiger corridor. The report has recorded that elephants regularly move through the area and that necessary measures should be taken to ensure their free movement. However, according to the representation submitted, the wildlife clearance process has not been initiated at this stage, and a detailed plan to mitigate the impact on wildlife has also not been submitted.

The proposed road passes through the Charmadi-Kanapadi Reserved Forest and the connecting area of the Kudremukh-Pushpagiri Tiger Corridor identified by the National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA). The area consists of naturally grown tropical rainforests, deep valleys and streams.

The forest diversion proposal covers only an 11.2-km stretch, from the Dakshina Kannada side of Charmadi village up to the Chikkamagaluru district border.

The representation also raises concerns over the possibility of additional forest use and tree felling if further road-widening works towards Mudigere are taken up as separate packages.

It states that instead of implementing the corridor as a single project, the project proponents may proceed with road widening in stages through separate packages. This possibility is a matter of concern, the representation states.

Trees are the life of our ghats and the wildlife. At least 50 % cutting of trees may not be necessary. Environmentalists and ecologists must strongly oppose this move and prevent felling maximum number of trees.

Suppose they cut these trees ,then the biggest mistake they will be doing to nature weather and country. They want to see elephants and tigers? And invite to destroy nature which is last remaining piece? Natural catastrophe is already visible and experience. No rain proper seasonal development of vegetables or fruits. What will wild animals do without this in forest? Already they are there in airport area in villages. And they are talking of preserve Elephants and tigers? Where will they remain without forest? A Proper thinking and planning is advisable.

We just can't afford to lose trees. Enough damage has already been inflicted on the environment in the name of development. Of what use is this development if it comes at the cost of felling trees. Before even thinking of cutting trees, plant double the number of saplings, tend for them for at least two years and then seek expert advice.

When we cut one tree we should plant few saplings is what we were taught in childhood. But never do we see anyone practising it. Humble request to the officials to first plant samplings equivalent to the trees that will be felled atleast 5years in advance.Once we see the upcoming forest cover then only go ahead with your projects. We are facing drastic climatic changes due to negligence from majority people. Wake up before it’s too late. All development will be useless if humans don’t have water ,clean air and food for their good health.

Agree, there will be some tree cutting. In compensation, they should plant trees somewhere else. This road is an important route connecting Mangaluru with Chikkamagaluru, hence this has to develop further from a connectivity standpoint and easy access for both the districts.
