Dehradun: Swami Nigamananda’s Fast, Death, Fade as Ramdev Hogs Limelight

Daijiworld Media Network – Dehradun (SP)

Dehradun, Jun 15: Even as Baba Ramdev’s fast that stretched to nine days, undertaken to press his demand for bringing back black money stashed away in foreign banks, and to step up war against corruption, got national attention, the death of an ascetic who valiantly fought against the stone quarries and pollution of River Ganga, by observing a fast for 114 days, went unnoticed. This unsung hero is Swami Nigamanananda. Ironically, he died at Himalayan Institute of Medical Sciences here, where Baba Ramdev was being treated. For two days, he had shared the intensive care unit of the hospital with Baba Ramdev, and died within hours after Baba was discharged.

The people are angry that Uttarakhand government, which convened repeated press conferences to pledge its support for Baba Ramdev’s efforts, failed to even express regret at the sad demise of Swami Nigamananda. The Swami had slipped to coma about a month before his death. He began his fast on February 19, slipped to coma on May 2, and did not recover since then. Haridwar district magistrate, R Meenakshisundaram, has said that post mortem was ordered on the mortal remains of the ascetic, as there are allegations that his fellow Sanyasis in the Ashram had fed him poison.  Swami Shivananda, founder chief of Matru Sadan had alleged, in a complaint to Kotwali police station on May 11 that poison was given to the Swami through a nurse on April 30. He said that this was responsible for the comatose condition of the Swami since May 2, and has blamed chief medical officer of the hospital, Dr P K Bhatnagar, and Jnanesh Kumar, owner of Himalayan Stone Crusher, for the episode. He said that a chemical compound named organophosphate was used by the nurse.

Swami Nigamananda from Matru Sadan Ashram in Haridwar, had been on fast since the last nearly four months, demanding shifting of stone crushers being operated at the spot where Kumbhamela is held, alleging that the powdered stone has been polluting River Ganga, considered to be holy by Hindus. The government neglected to look into his demands, and he breathed his last at the hospital on Monday June 13. Nigamananda (36) had fought a lone battle against the state government’s apathy relating to environmental damage inflicted by the stone crushing units, and had been trying to attract the attention of the national media towards the natural calamities suffered by the people of the state.

The death of the Sadhu away from media glare because of the utter neglect of the state government has given rise to a number of questions about the sincerity of the government and the media towards causes backed by social concern. While eminent leaders from various fields including political, rushed to ask Ramdev to end his fast, no one batted an eyelid as Nigamananda continued to lie on his deathbed for causes that were dear to his heart, and in the interests of his homeland.

Congress leaders from Uttarakhand including Tehri MLA, Kishore Upadhyaya, have blamed the state government for the death of Swami Nigamananda. The leaders have been blaming the Chief Minister, who had visited Baba Ramdev regularly to press for early ending of his fast, of not caring to meet Swami Nigamananda. Swami Nigamananda’s noble motives got dashed because of stays obtained by owners of stone crushers from the High Court, and lack of support from the local people who did not rally behind him. In the coming days, Congress is likely to use this incident as a weapon to take on BJP. All India Congress Committee general secretary, Janardan Dwivedi, said that the BJP, which had steadfastly supported Baba Ramdev, could have saved Swami Nigamananda, if it had paid heed to his plea for saving River Ganga from pollution.

swami Nigamanandaji has sacrificed his life for the sake of the nation. we Indiann's salute him. but here question arises who is responsible for his death , the state government, the center or the so called media. At present the media is only covering those news which is gaining trp and money. thus media has no right to call itself as the 4th pillar of democracy. after the death of swamiji we can just pay him tribute and nothing more than else.....now time come for us to wake up and fight against these Hippocratic political parties...swamiji's death can not go into vein

Swami Nigamananda is a real Hero.
Unlike Mr. Ramdev who wanted to evade arrest through women dress.
IN HINDI WE SAY FOR SUCH PEOPLE BUZDHIL
There are plenty of cows in the banks of Ganga River.
These cow gods are urinating and shitting which is presumed by some hindus as holy.
Plus more than a million people die and their ashes are thrown in the Ganga River.
Now tell me who is responsible for the polluting Ganga River?

Ultimately the river Ganga will be Holy from Unholy.

Swami Nigamanand, was not fasting just for the cause of ‘Ganga Clean Up’. It was secondary. The primary cause was that he was fasting since 19th Feb to protest against the Uttarakhand government's refusal to ban mining along a stretch of the River Ganga near Rishikesh. He was actually poisoned by the mining mafia, on 30th April and as a result he went into a coma. He died virtually unnoticed and unsung after fasting for 115 days. May his soul rest in peace.
No legislation was brought by the state govt to curb the activities of Mining mafia.
It is a right decision by the Governor to call for an independent probe to ascertain the cause of his death.

It is very unfortunate that swami Nigamanand had to sacrifice his life for the cause of clean Ganga. It shows that unless you have strong political and media backing your efforts,be whatever important the cause, could not succeed. The lathargic attitude of our people also contributes for this. The political parties are playing havoc on Hindus. Ganga is common to all irrespective of religion. Everybody should support for a clean Ganga. It is our nation's pride. Billions of people around the world love it. It is the duty of every Indian to keep Ganga clean.

Nagesh Nayak, it was the responsibility of your BJP state govt of Uttarakhand to clean the river. The BJP govt in collusion with local mining mafia were polluting the Ganges river. The swamiji was protesting against BJP state govt and they are responsible for his demise.

Swami Nigamananda is the real hero and not some fake baba doing fake fast for seven days in media glare.

I know that people die every day on the streets and often nobody cares. Well what a shame the people of India are India's worst enemies. It is a wake up call for everyone in India, the world needs you. But you prefer to live in your tiny little world of egoism? WAKE UP!

Ganga river is the pride of Bharat mata and inspiration to live pure to every Indian. But the sad part this holy river has been maligned by the political/land/sand/mines mafia, might be , including all political parties.

The selfless self purification, fast unto death by Swami Nigamananda will be remembered by all honest citizens of this country irrespective of religion because his death by fasting almost 3 months for up keeping the purity of Ganga River.

Selfless vs. selfish, service vs. business, self sacrifice vs. self glorification. Swami Swami Nigamananda’s has shown to the world that he is selfless and do not require any public selfish glory as seen in recent incidents with others baba’s. His self sacrifice act will be remembered those who acknowledge his act. Swami Nigamananda, you have already given the true message of Hinduism without preaching which is self sacrifice, self purification, completely detached from this world. We lost a clean soul. May your soul rest in peace.

One Swami Nigamananda too had no larger following was ignored-
The question is why media who created lot of hype didn't cover such an environment friendly cause-which our next generation we are living as legacy?
Rajiv Gandhi in 1985 started the process of CLEAN GANGA project-why consecutive govts., didn't continue the process.?
    Where was Environment minister?
Why no legislation was brought to curb the activities of Mining mafia?
Why our Courts grant stay against closure than stay the rape of environment?

I support the cause behind the fasting of Hazare and Baba Ramdev and I appreciate BJP for supporting Ramdev in this (I am least worried about the political reason for their act as long as cause is good). However, as far as Swami Nigamanand's fast and eventual death is concerned I squaresly blame BJP for not giving equal important to his noble cause. (Here I blame them fully for giving priority to political agenda than the cause). Blaming UPA is of no use as we all know for last 50 to 60 years what they are and their attitude and strategy towards such protests. However, we need to introspect ourselves here. Imagine, if this fast was given publicity by media & the Sadhu had survived, then the same people who are appreciating this Sadhu would have listed him as another dongi Baba. Those who are now blaming BJP for not supporting this BABA would have opined differently if BJP had supported. Why this double standard? Just bcse he is now became eternal? You people praise if BABAs fast & die otherwise term them as dongi even if the cause is good? Strange mentality exactly like Congress & BJP.

Baba n Swami's at work while country sleeps
    Found an article of 2008
    http://www.organiser.org/dynamic/modules.php?name=Content&pa=showpage&pid=244&page=6
brief: Baba Ramdev will spearhead the save Ganga movement. Talking about the mission, he said a nationwide intense movement would have to be launched for the same. He was addressing intellectuals, saints, social workers and political leaders at a meeting at Patanjali Yogapeeth in Haridwar. Expressing solidarity with Prof. Gurudas Aggrawal, the meeting requested Baba Ramdev to spearhead the movement.many saints also have come forward in support of Prof. Aggarwal and his team of river saviours. Swami Shivanand of Matri Sadan (Haridwar) and Shri Gopal Muni went Uttarkashi to bless them while the disciples of Swami Harihar Aditya of Uttarkashi are leaving no stone unturned to mobilise the masses.

"Swami Nigamananda’s noble motives got dashed because of stays obtained by owners of stone crushers from the High Court".

There is no point in blaming BJP alone for this incident,in view of the High Court's stay order.

The Congress is shedding crocodile's tears. It has no moral right as it is insensitive to the issues raised by Baba Ramdev and is carrying out a malicious campaign against both Baba and Hazare.

Congress is interested only in protecting Sonia Gandhi and her back money stashed in foreign banks.

It can stoop to the level of killing anyone to protect Sonia.

Why the media was silent for all these 114 days and now suddenly comparing Baba Ramdev's fast with that of Nigamananda.
