Udupi: Paediatric bone marrow transplantation services at Kasturba Hospital - A rewarding journey

Udupi, Aug 3: "All the allied departments which are required for successfully performing a bone marrow transplant is available in Kasturba Medical College and Hospital, Manipal and that children with these disorders do not need to travel long distances for this procedure," Dr Avinash Shetty, medical superintendent emphasised at the press meet, held on Wednesday, August 3 at hotel Ocean Pearl here.
 
He wad speaking to media persons on the occasion of celebrate Paediatric Bone Marrow Transplantation facility, a press meet conducted by Kasturba Medical College and Hospital, Manipal on Wednesday August 3, under division of Paediatric haematology and Oncology of Manipal Comprehensive Cancer care Centre.












































 
Dr Avinash Shetty further said, "This year, KMC is celebrating 60 years. Patients from 18 districts and even from other states are coming here to get treatment. As many as 10 patients were undergone bone marrow transplant treatment at KMC here and recovered. The total cost of this treatment is Rs 10 lac to Rs 15 lac. But it is a huge amount for poor people to afford. Our main intension is, no one should deprived of this treatment, just because of financial issues. For this, 90% of the cost afforded by the KMC with the help of donors, crowd funding and CSR funds of organisations. Many of the donors are coming forward to donation. About 30,000 patients and 515 cancer patients got benefitted under Ayushman Bharath. For BMT treatment, it needs a super specialty isolation room with specialised doctors team." 
 
Dr Sharath Kumar Rao, Dean, Kasturba Medical College, Manipal released  information pamphlets on paediatric bone marrow transplant clinic and said, “Bone marrow transplant is a lifesaving procedure for various cancers and blood-related disorders."
 
He added, “The complex medical treatment is being performed in only major cities Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata, Bangalore and for the first time in Coastal Karnataka, Kasturba Medical College and Hospital, Manipal has initiated these services for children." 
 
Around 10000 patients are needed BMT treatment, but In India, currently 500 patients are getting it. I wishes that more such centers should come up. If they get treatment on time, they can also lead life like any other normal people. 
 
On this occasion, Dr Avinash Shetty distributed Manipal Arogya card to press reporters.
 
Dr Vinay M V, assistant professor and pediatric bone marrow transplant specialist in the division gave an overview of the process of bone marrow transplantation in children. 
 
Dr Vasudeva Bhat K, associate professor and In charge of the division said, “Bone marrow transplantation has changed the lives of many patients who are diagnosed with diseases previously said to be incurable. The division has completed 10 such transplants so far and successfully cured these patients." 
 
Dr Archana M.V, assistant professor in the division informed that,  the division treats these patients holistically by providing financial assistance, nutritional supplementation and accommodation whenever feasible.
 
Smitha, mother of Pranam and Laksminarayan, father of Nirup, who is BMT beneficiary shared their experiences and thanked the KMC doctors team. 
 
Dr Naveen Salins, coordinator MCCCC were present.. 
 
Krishna Prasad from department of Marketing was the master of the ceremony of the programme.
