Udupi: Neelavar Goshala plans to generate 1200 units current from cow dung

Daijiworld Media Network – Udupi (MS)

Udupi, Jul 24: A project which will put an end to cow slaughtering is on the anvil at Neelavar Goshala of Pejawar Math. An ambitious project of producing electricity from cow dung is being implemented at this goshala.

More number of orphaned cows are being looked after in this goshala. This will end the biggest social menace of cow theft and selling of cows that have stopped giving milk, faced by the coastal districts.

Neelavar Goshala has been selected for the ambitious project of the union government. Thousands of units of electricity will be generated by this method. The surplus electricity will be sold to Mescom.

The first bio-electricity plant is being constructed at Neelavar goshala. Green signal to this effect has given by the renewable energy department of the union government. Discussion in this regard was held by Pejawar Sree with state minister Bhagawant Khooba recently. This will strengthen the ‘save cow’ project also.

This project is also environmentally-friendly. That is why the union government is encouraging the same. Cow dung for this project will be purchased from Neelavar goshala and other goshalas that are functioning nearby and also people who do animal husbandry. A project of processing cow dung of 5000 cows is being designed keeping in mind the future viability of the plan. It is possible to generate a minimum of 1,200 units of electricity every day.

A slurry of water mixed with cow dung is an excellent manure for agriculture. Goshala can sell the same through tankers to farmers of coastal districts. The cost of the project will run into Rs 10 crore. Detailed project report will be made ready within three months and then approval and grant for the same will be obtained as per present plans.

A brewery in Denmark is making beer using human urine. The specialty pilsner is called "Pisner," a name derived from wordplay on the type of beer and local slang. The brew is made with malting barley fertilized by the contents of urinals at the largest music festival in Northern Europe. The 50,000 liters of human waste liquid was used as an alternative to traditional animal manure or factory-made fertilizer products.

Why not move a step ahead and develop technology to brew beer from human urine, which gets simply wasted and available in abundance in the most populous country in the world, like "Pisner" a Danish branded beer; export of which can earn valuable foreign exchange for us:: All about the newly launched beer made with urine To all the beer lovers out there, here is one of the most unique beers of all time that you need to try at least once. Singapore has taken innovations in beer-brewing a notch higher with the introduction of 'Newbrew.' While it may appear or taste like usual beer, there's an unconventional twist to it. The brewery's unique craft beer is made using 'Newater,' Singapore's brand of clean, high-quality water recycled from sewage and urine. About 95 per cent of Newbrew is made of Newater, which not only adheres to international standards of safe drinking water but also is tested clean enough to use for brewing beer.

Many people fertilize their gardens with composted cow manure but don’t realize the hidden dangers. Cow manure may harbor diseases such as E. Coli O157, Listeriosis, Salmonellosis, Cryptosporidiosis, and Mad Cow disease. These diseases are fecal to oral in transmission and may be passed to humans if vegetables from the garden are not properly washed. Protect your family and yourself by frequent hand washing and proper food preparation to avoid infection.

Eventually it will be viable; in the meantime environment will also be protected. A solution that I had suggested years ago giving the example of a shoe factory in Mahim (Primo) which had a pilot project in Borivili some 70 years ago. And, of course, it is a good fertilizers; furthermore, from my own experience, briquettes made of cow dung (only manual labour and sunlight to dry are involved) can be used as fuel at least to light up the kitchen fire. Now, I know there are many critics out there who laugh at the whole idea.

The financial viability of the scheme is doubtful. Taking the capital investment.of Rs 10 crore and production of 1200 units per day as reported in the article the ball park figure per unit works out to Rs 36, which is very high. There are other costs too such as fodder, labour which is operational in nature that will further add to the cost and may be minor revenue from the generator residue. Hope due care is taken before investment to generate electricity.
