Mangaluru: Sea erosion continues at Ullal – Contact with 15 houses snapped

Daijiworld Media Network – Mangaluru (MS)

Mangaluru, Jun 28: Sea erosion fury continues in Someshwara Ucchila, Battappady and Ullal Seaground areas. The beach road collapsed further and is on the verge of getting washed away into the sea.

Contact with more than 15 houses is snapped. Residents are facing difficulties even to come out of the houses.

The connecting road to Battampady is damaged due to unscientific work that was carried out for the past two years. As retaining wall burns were not built on an area of 600 meters, Ucchila-end point connection is snapped. Most of the land area of End Point are washed away into the sea.

Around 15 houses are facing danger of collapsing and getting washed away in sea at Ullal Seaground. Mescom is holding electricity pole shifting work at Ucchila. Locals are urging to put stones on temporary basis at least.

To stop this sea erosion, I think that it is better to give contract to Kerala Government contractors, they have done the perfect job.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but on account of global warming Mangalore is one of the coastal cities that will be partially under water in the next 100 years. The UN agencies are not sure as to the true extent of damages but several coastal cities will be effected in India, with all low lying areas along the coast will be taken over by the sea, and/or they would become islands off the coast of India. The only choice the Indian governments has is to spend trillions of rupees to rebuild the cities on dykes, dams, water ways and tunnels in line with the cities of Amsterdam, Venice, etc. etc.

Still they can protect the shore and expensive future efforts to save the road can be prevented. Its not a rocket technology to build permanent road on sea side and tourism revenue. If there is a will there is way! Who will wake up our MP / MLA's?? and which contractor can do quality job after shelling huge %age

The sea eventually gives their gifts back to them during cyclones and high tides.

Madam, we Moyas are original fishermen since last 600+ years in this area. Fisheries road was built by govt without taking local fishermen in to confidence. Sea was 300 feet away as of 2015. Our dwellings in existence & fish boats used to land on this vast shore, day & night. We have not taken single paisa from govt, though many houses were lost in 2015 onwards. Our contention is poor technology used & absolutely no supervision by officials, including Port authority, ADB officials. Just putting rocks one over the other in monsoon season, for last 5 years is a nomads solution not an engg solution. So, please do not comment if you have not visited the site in last 10 years. Disappointed ☹️

What are the local MLA and MP doing???... Why people of the area did not raise their concerns much before the rainy season???... Vulnerable sea coasts must be protected as priority... We see revetments being laid in less risk prone areas... Now whatever they do will be an eye wash... Another opportunity for 40%...

It reminds Gate way of India built during British era. Still going strong and saved several Km seashore and land of Bombay. If coastal work was scientific and non corrupt, this situation wouldn't have existed.
