DG&IGP Praveen Sood says unless it is an offence police cannot stop vehicle riders in Bengaluru

Bengaluru, Jun 27 (IANS): Karnataka Director General and Inspector General of Police Praveen Sood directed the traffic police in Bengaluru on Monday not to stop vehicle riders and drivers unless there is a traffic offence. The move has been appreciated by the vehicle riders who complained of harassment by traffic police on the pretext of document verification.

Srivatsava Vajapeyam, a resident of Bengaluru, had written to Praveen Sood that when he was ACP traffic, he had banned stopping vehicles for checking documents. "You could be stopped only for an offence.

"Now with Praveen Sood as DGP, stopping vehicles is a daily phenomenon," Srivatsava had written on June 26.

Replying to this, Praveen Sood stated on Monday that "Yes I stand by it and reiterate again. No vehicle shall be stopped only for checking documents unless it has committed a traffic violation visible to the naked eye. Only exception is drunken driving. Have instructed the Commissioner of Police, Bengaluru City and Joint Commissioner of Traffic for implementation immediately."

The tweet by Praveen Sood has come following a meeting on traffic management in Bengaluru city which is becoming a challenge chaired by the Additional Chief Secretary Rajneesh Goyal.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his recent visit to Bengaluru spoke about easing the traffic flow and Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai has also underlined that his government would strive to resolve the traffic woes in Bengaluru.

Bengaluru crossed the 10 million mark in January, 2021 in the number of vehicles. 6.4 million are two wheelers, 2.3 million are private cars. The city added 6,00,000 vehicles every year since 2018. In 2020-21, 1.1 million vehicles were added despite the Covid pandemic, according to official statistics.

If this happens and strictly followed in Bangalore that is well and good. But, watch out then, the police personnel from inspectors to constables seeking transfers to other areas. End of the day, hefty bribes gets exchanged when controlling lucarative places and that has to return back.

Police should do Police job -- and vehicle etc is RTO job - It is all related to corruption -- Same number multiple vehicles - often in Long distance buses - transport vehicles -- Also with corruption few know how to get away---in the bargain the public who are honest made to suffer -- suddenly out of the blue in heavy traffic you will find police jumping across hauling up someone -- Basically what are the documents -- vehicle RC card -- insurance - pollution - --if at selling point as new if taxes etc collected properly there should not be a problem -- --stolen vehicles maybe a separate issue -- -- with technology easy to catch offenders- --

2 days back, I have seen 2 lady traffic sub- inspectors near shivajinagar abusing a middle aged bike rider in singular language only for not having IND number plate. The high handedness of the traffic police has reached its peak across the state.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his recent visit to Bengaluru spoke about easing the traffic flow and Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai has also underlined that his government would strive to resolve the traffic woes in Bengaluru. These people travel without any glitches and now they pretend to understand the daily traffic congestion to show that they understand our problems. There are ignorant ones clapping even for that statement on PM.

This rule should be made applicable to the entire State. in Mangalore the Traffic Police harass by stopping the vehicles unnecessarily for the verification of records. Why its so. When no. of heavy vehicles like buses and lorries park along the Jeppu Seminary Road no traffic Police is bothored to vacate them. Why so? Why this disparity?
