Mangaluru: Demand for blueberries shoot up in coastal region

Daijiworld Media Network – Mangaluru (MS)

Mangaluru, May 14: It is the season of fruits now. There is great demand for seasonal fruits in the coastal districts. Blueberries, which are considered to increase immunity due to its high antioxidant nature, are in high demand and the price has also seen steep increase.

The rate of blueberries has shot up to Rs 600 to Rs 800. Generally this fruit arrives from Andhra Pradesh, Belagavi, Bijapur in addition to Vamadapadavu, Bajpe, Kinnigoli, Bantwal, Moodbidri and Udupi to the central market in the city. However, this year outstation blueberries have still not arrived in the city. Hence, the rate has skyrocketed.

The yield of this fruit has gone down. Moreover, no one is ready to pluck the fruit from the tree. Earlier, school children used to do this job. But now most of them are hooked on mobile phones. According to agriculturist Cyril D’Souza of Shirtady, removing fruits without damaging their skin is a skilful and tedious job.

Blueberries are considered as very beneficial to diabetic patients. According to Ayurvedic expert Dr Narayana M of Bikarnakatte juice and kashaya made of blueberries is very effective in controlling sugar levels.

If any one would have an inkling that jamun would yield such high rates they would have had jamun tree plantations as it's a very hardy forest tree which requires hardly any care! Probably now some areca planters will have double thoughts as the demand for this fruit will increase exponentially due to it's medicinal properties.

Local ones are small in size and less fleshy as compared to those from other states. It's an irony that the once junglee fruit, which used to fall down and get wasted is in high demand today because of it's medicinal properties.

Thanks Cynthia for your clarification. My Bappu's place in Mermajal there were few trees and my cousin used collect them in a unique way. When they are over ripe thy taste too soft and tasty. Only thing, must take care not to drop on the cloths. I tnk the stain won't clear easily. Wow, childhood memories. Bensa, Binda, cashew and some one beside. Paradise 🕺💃

Yes...Flavs....they are zambla in konkani nerale hannu in kannada....jamun in hindi....Java plum in english....Village side plenty of such trees are there......It looks like purple carpet is laid beneath the tree when they fall after getting riped.......I heard from so many even the seeds are sold now a days. Its used in the treatment of diabetes. People dry the seeds and make powder and have it. I am proud our kinnigoly is one of the places famous for zambla ....
