"Develop Panipat war memorial to create awareness about Maratha valour"

New Delhi, Apr 6 (IANS): Maharashtra Legislative Council deputy chairperson Neelam Gorhe on Wednesday demanded that Kaala Amb on the outskirts of Panipat, the place where the historic third battle of Panipat took place, be developed properly as a war memorial to spread awareness about Maratha valour.

Gorhe put forth her demands to Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) Director General V. Vidyavathi during a meeting earlier in the day. "Panipat in Haryana should be developed as a proper tourist place for facilitating the visitors to the war memorial at Kaala Amb. There is a lack of awareness. We need tourist helplines, a detailed information board at the memorial, a light & sound show can be started, there should be proper security for the place, including CCTV cameras," Gorhe told mediapersons.

Earlier on Monday, Gorhe had visited the Kaala Amb memorial - an ASI protected site - on the outskirts of Panipat city.

"The place needs a regular development plan. ASI DG has promised to give immediate clearance for developmental work at Panipat war memorial and also keep us updated," Gorhe said.

The leader from Maharashtra said that Panipat was part of greater Kurukshetra area of the past and hence its development needs to be aligned with the ongoing development of Kurukshetra.

Gorhe also raised issue of several ASI protected sites in Maharashtra, including Ekveera Devi near Mumbai, with the ASI DG and demanded that the ASI regularly give a break up of work done and pending. "I have also invited Vidyavathi to come to Mumbai for a meeting to discuss all such issues," she said.

Gorhe is in Delhi as part of the Maharashtra group of legislators who have come here for a two-day training with the Lok Sabha. She said, she had raised similar issues with Speaker Om Birla too.
