Mangaluru: St Joseph Engineering College hosts its 16th graduation ceremony

Mangaluru, Mar 26: The 16th graduation ceremony of St Joseph Engineering College (SJEC), was held on Saturday March 26 in the open-air stage of the college.

The ceremony witnessed the awarding of graduation certificates by the institution to the Class of 2021 comprising of 563 Undergraduates (BE) and 115 Postgraduates (MBA, MCA MTech and PhD).

Dr S N Sridhara, vice-chancellor, Hindustan Institute of Technology and Science, graced the occasion as chief guest and presented the degree certificates to the graduands. Karthik S K, deputy manager at Toyota Kirloskar Motor and an alumnus of SJEC from the batch of 2006, was the guest of honour on the occasion. Dr Peter Paul Saldanha, bishop of Mangalore and president of SJEC, presided over the ceremony.

Fr Wilfred Prakash D’Souza, director of SJEC, welcomed the graduands from the class of 2021 and dignitaries to the graduation ceremony. Dr Rio D’Souza, principal of SJEC introduced the chief guest and the guest of honour.

Karthik S K spoke about his own experiences and recalled his days as a student. He called upon the students to be flexible and be ready to face the challenges. He went on to say that learning is continual and each of the graduands needs to keep learning which is a key to success in the industry. He opined that while it is crucial to work hard and take risks, it is also important to adapt to changes and innovate constantly along with being ethical.

Dr S N Sridhara, in his address, mentioned that while education aids students to improve intelligence quotient, graduands need to develop emotional quotient, adaptability quotient and spiritual quotients. He said that life and career have to be synchronous and graduands have to ensure that they develop essential social skills. While congratulating the graduands, he said success is not final and one should constantly be in pursuit of excellence.

Dr Rio D’Souza, administered the graduation oath. Evita Lavicia D’Souza, a graduand from the department of Business Administration and Mr Sanketh B Prabhu, graduand from the department of Electronics and Communication Engineering, were the valedictorians from the class of 2021 and delivered the valedictorian addresses.

Scholastic achievers and sports achievers were recognized and awarded by Bishop Dr Peter Paul Saldanha. The VTU rank holders of the college in Sheik Mohammad Zunain (4th Rank in Civil Engineering), Sushmitha (8th Rank in MCA) and Varun M (9th Rank in Mechanical Engineering) were also felicitated on the occasion.

Delivering the presidential address, the bishop said that the college rejoices with its graduands for their achievements. He said success cannot be read without hard work and called upon everyone to march ahead with grit and determination while being faithful to God, parents, alma mater and society. He asked the graduands to look beyond borders, collaborate and cooperate to create a society of love, respect and care.

The members of the governing board and governing council were also present along with Fr Alwyn Richard D’Souza, assistant director of SJEC, Rakesh Lobo, HR manager of the college and Renuka Tantry, co-convener of the event.

Dr Sharun Mendonca, convener of the programme offered the vote of thanks. Preetha Aroza and Roopesh compered the programme.

SJEC wished the graduates from the class of 2021 all success in their future endeavours.
