Covid cases surge in 16 districts; restrictions likely on New Year, Christmas celebration

Bengaluru, Dec 6 (IANS): Sixteen districts in Karnataka have seen a rise in the number of new Covid cases in the first week of December. As many as 500 students have tested positive in the recent past, causing a major worry for the authorities. Sources in the health department said that if the same trend continued then restrictions may be put during the New Year and Christmas celebrations.

By November first week the Covid cases were on a decline and many districts, including those bordering Maharashtra, recorded zero cases paving the way for lifting of restrictions completely. However, the state government has again come up with restrictions to tackle the situation.

According to the health and family welfare department, Kodagu, Haveri, Chikkaballapura, Mandya, Mysuru, Davanagere and Uttara Kannada districts recorded higher numbers of Covid cases. Other districts have recorded very low or single digit Covid cases. But, the Covid cases are rising in all districts where the situation was under total control, and the increase is four-fold.

Between November 26 and December 3, when compared to last week (November 18 to 25) 2,202 cases were reported against 1,835 cases. The number of Covid cases stood at 1,588 from November 12-19. There is a 25 per cent spike in the cases in the last 15 days according to the statistics available with the health department.

Shivamogga and Koppal districts have seen a four fold spike. Shivamogga reported 28 Covid cases between November 18- 25. It rose to 86 from November 26 to December 3 registering a 430 per cent hike. Similarly Koppal, which recorded zero cases till November 25-18, registered four cases between November 26 to December 3. The Covid cases rose to 1,167 from 995 in Bengaluru Urban in the same period.

Sources in the health department said that Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai has stated that there was no agenda before the government to impose restrictions on activities and celebrations. However, he has stated that an appropriate decision will be taken in the coming days after analysing the situation in the state.

Initiate necessary actions like imposing night curfew, restricting gatherings in large numbers immediately so that spread of covid is minimised and by Christmas and new year, covid infection is brought under control. Strictly penalise all those who do not take precaution s like wearing mask properly, washing hands and practicing covid appropriate behaviour. I had been to a hospital today and noticed several people without mask, some who wore it below the chin and some with children not wearing mask. Sadly some hospital staff were also without mask. When will we be serious? Do we fear only punishment?

This is a ploy to divide people by using a plandemic hoax which never affected 99% of the population. Wake up and unite whether jabbed or not 'cos it's the freedom of speech and practice is at stake here. Let's urge the government to stop these tactics and useless mandates for an ordinary seasonal cold and flu virus. Let them concentrate on governance rather than trying to control our lives by taking away our freedoms in the garb of containment and acting like saviors. We are taking care of our health and wellbeing all these years and let the government keep away from us and our health care be our right. Taking away our freedoms is not solution which is worse cure than the propped up pandemic. Let Bad Santa remain in Siberia leaving us alone.

Bommai and his govt. Have lost their marbles and going beserk.. When Covid was ON, they did not have any problem with Diwali, dessehra, kumb mela etc. Now suddenlybthey wake up when Christmas and New Year coming. This is a party of hypocrites and only trying appeasement politics since they have nothing to talk about development and progress. Their efforts to suppress minorities will not work and its a matter of time before they will be booted Out.. Its a shame we have such a government

Citizen, Mangalore From last 2 years prestigious Mangalore Dasara Procession is cancelled, even Mangalore Ganeshostava also cancelled which usually will be held in Nehru Maidan, All festivals celebrated considering restrictions of the government. In current situation as everyone knows Omicron impact increasing worldwide, as a citizen you have to support government in this difficult time and stop using minority/majority cards which will be useless!!

its unfair to put restrictions on Christmas celebrations... restrictions or lockdown has no logic...ramp up vaccinations and keep hospitals ready for serious cases...majority only get mild infections which does not any treatment...

True thinker, Mangalore This action is due to Omicron variant impact in India and worldwide not due Christmas. Omicron Impact was not there during dasara, diwali. Government must Impose strict restrictions to avoid omicron threat and government shouldn't listen such emotional dramas of minorities now.

Height of hypocrisy by the Government diwali last month, dussehra, and etc no sign of Covid, even if there were cases now when Christmas and new year is to be celebrated the state government wakes up from its deep slumber. Why cannot they shut the borders including Tamil Nadu, Andhrapradesh, Telangana?
