Mangaluru: Roads stink as fish-laden trucks spill out waste water

Daijiworld Media Network – Mangaluru (MS)

Mangaluru, Dec 4: It seems there is no end to this long standing issue of water getting leaked onto the road from vehicles transporting fish from the fishing port at Bunder of the city.

Hundreds of trucks which carry fish from the fishing port use ice on them to preserve their freshness. This ice gets melted and mixes with the waste of fish. In addition, this water contains oil. Many two wheeler riders skid due to this and have lost lives also. Public are expressing disappointment at the apathy of the administration on this issue.

In the state of Kerala there are strict rules for trucks carrying fish. The trucks have to install tanks of 100 to 200 litre capacity on the rear end of the vehicle. The water that gets seeped from the truck or vehicle should fall into that tank. This has to be poured in deserted areas. However, In Karnataka this rule is not followed at all.

Most of the fish carrying vehicles approach the highway via Mangaladevi temple road. People living in these areas are having a difficult time. Police just fine the vehicles when they receive complaints. But a permanent solution is not yet taken by the district administration.

City police commissioner says that they have received many complaints in this connection and he has instructed the DCP of crimes and traffic to take suitable action.

Same used to happen goa but then locals brought a new rule that if some truck leaks out even one drop of fish water then the driver and cleaner would be made to drink one cup of the water in front of all the public.....surprisingly all leak incidents stopped 100%

Next it will be fish markets in the neighbourhood, then it will be fish vendors getting into the bus, it will reach to neighbouring kitchen spreading fish fry smell. Those of you who have given thumbs down, will be victims of this attitude soon. Think little long term, it is not what you see today, it is what is the larger scheme of things for the future.

Raj kudla ,what Jossey says is true.He suggested it because in kerala fish water is supposed to empty in deserts.so instead of pouring fish water somewhere in desert could be successfully poured out to coconut trees or any other vegetations.Other side this menace is since long time there why govt is not taking any action ?MMC should look into this to avoid accidents ,loss of life delivery lorry must see that safe and without problems to others. Why cant such a small problem cant be solved by them .?when they dont follow rules simply cancel the licence.Finished.
