Girl student who tried to end life scores highest in supplementary exams

Tumakuru, Oct 12 (IANS): A Karnataka SSLC (Class 10) girl student, who had attempted to commit suicide at being denied the opportunity to appear in annual examinations, has managed to score maximum marks in the supplementary exams last month.

Greeshma, a student of Alvas school of Moodbidri, scored 599 marks out of a total of 625 marks in the examinations.

Among 53,155 students who took the exams, she scored the highest marks.

Greeshma, who had scored 95 per cent in Class 9, was not issued a hall ticket for the SSLC exams as she could not pay the fee of the school. The parents came to know about this when they had tried to enrol her for the exams. Appeals to the Deputy Director for Public Instruction (DDPI) and the Education Minister were of no avail.

A heartbroken Greeshma had attempted to commit suicide on July 17 at her residence. However, timely treatment had saved her life. The incident had made headlines as the Karnataka government was all set to hold SSLC examinations amid the challenge of the Covid pandemic in the state.

After coming to know about the incident, then Education Minister Suresh Kumar had rushed to her residence and spoken to her. He had asked Greeshma to be brave and assured of giving an opportunity for her to write the SSLC exams during supplementary examinations.

Suresh Kumar had further asked her to focus on her studies without worrying too much about what happened.

After the results, an elated Suresh Kumar congratulated her.

"Greeshma, has become a model for others. She did not get diverted from the commitment. Greeshma has achieved what she aspired for," he said.

"I had been to Greeshma's residence. I had given her courage and promised that it is my responsibility to give her the opportunity to take supplementary exams. I have also asked her to prepare for it without worrying. Even after I was dropped from the cabinet, I kept in touch with the Commissioner, SSLC Board Directors, Deputy Director of Madhugiri Academic district and Heads of Alva's institute to ensure Greeshma attended exams. After getting to know about the results and her achievement, my mind is relaxed now."

Greeshma stated that she is very happy with the results and thanked everyone who helped her to take exams. "I committed a mistake earlier. I had prepared for well the exams," she added.

Greeshma hails from Koratagere town in Tumakuru district. She is the daughter of the Narasimhamurthy and Padmavathi.

well she was already good in studies before and she was not given hall ticket(that means she did not fail common sense) and supplementary exams are easy as we know, so logically the girl scored good marks hence,no need of panic by media(greatness DEBUNKED)

I Bet the same school that caused her so much mental anguish to the point of suicide attempt will now put a huge banner with her photo congratulating her to advertise their school. Also gotta love the education minister who only woke up after her attempt on ending her life. Has enough ego to boast how he visited her and did the job he was supposed to do in the first place but has no humility to apologise that he didn't care when the parents complained to him initially.

you people are busy in cow catching and love jihad. Just look around and see what is happening with a girl child. If you have little shame ,turn around pay her college fee and admit her in a good college.

Flavian Kuwait, dont worry about what other people do.Better concentrate what you do to others. There are various type of people like me and you, short tall,or thin and thick.same way also their thinking.others cant change it.You eat beef ,I eat something else.ok.This girl had almost thrown her life and someone saved her.It was abig fault who didnt give hall ticket. They too must have thought she will not be able to get higher level.Look, how one can think wrong.Thatswhy we shouldnt measure ones capacity just with one attempt.Congratulations dear, for showing world ,you can and in future too ,will be and sure.hats off.In everyone there is a hidden strenght .make use of it.No need of only a engineer or doctor, others too have other capacity.

Congratulations Greeshma on passing the exam with flying colors. The school should be held responsible if anything untoward happened to Greeshma. At least allowed her to answer the exam but not give them certificate till the fees is paid. There are many girls who have lost their life from this institution.

You are absolutely right Mr.Kiran D'souza. Education is just a business nowadays. Educated young guys who have spent max. amounts are roaming with CV for Jobs. Instead of wasting money for education better to sell pakodas in street.

Merely promises and giving courage doesn't bring happiness to ones life .The minister should focus on curb the acceleration of suicide rate which is deeply rooted due to his incompetent governance..

It is very sad news, that due to fee payment, one’s brilliant student's future put to stake. Is the principals is so inhuman? Where are the mahila morcah, bate bachavo, ete organization? Are they sleeping or in coma? I urge strict action should be taken against, School principal, and DDPI and Education Minister who ignore the plea of the student. It is the fact, bottom to top are deaf and dumb in this case.

Why so much drama from school administration, DDPI, Education minister? If any untoward incident happened, then who was responsible? Government says girl education is free....this free...that free... It's only through mouth? School, administration, DDPI, minister, government should be held responsible for not issuing hall ticket & compensation should be paid to the girl , family for giving trauma, playing with her life. All students should be passed without any exams till degree. Education system is of no use. Those who have no education have become crorepatis, those with education degrees either working for 10-15K salary or roaming around with CV's to get a white collar job. Education makes them not to work for blue collar jobs. All should be given basic education, get rid of this drama of exams.

Many convent schools display list of students who are yet to pay fees. Government schools are anyday better and nowadays quality of education in government schools has improved a lot. In Delhi government schools have started teaching patriotism along with the subjects.

School administrators should have a heart, should contact local Panchayat to announce if needy students requiring help in paying the fees so that a young life will not wilt before blooming. At-least, keep the contribution of 'Old Students' for such good works. Don't be so money oriented, don't be so heartless.
